ciao martin in answer to your question we are having rennovations done at the moment just outside ceglie, the cost of putting in a septic tank was approx €2000 yes you do need planning permission to do this. i suppose if you are competent enough you could put this in yourself, just make sure you obtain the correct permission, we are dealing with a trullo builder in ceglie pm me if you want me to put you in touch with them, ciao marco
[quote=Martin475]Hi I've been looking at the forum for a few weeks now (on and off, I stop to make a cup of tea now and then) and wondered if anybody could help me. I am looking at buying a place just outside Celie Messapica:) . The problem I have is that there is no septic tank or in fact any form of waste disposal (god knows what the previous Inhabitants done, I'll probably find out when I dig the garden). Does anybody know if I need a specialist to select a suitable site because of the water drain off? Do I need planning permission? Aprox what would it cost (I know it would depend on the land)? Has anybody else had experience having this done in Puglia? and does anybody know a reputable builder in Puglia area that speaks some english.

We, unfortunately, still have our `pozzo nero` but should have a fossa biologica put in very soon. Things got held up slightly as, when we were just about to have the work done, our geometra (that we are using for our new house) told us that you should really get permission (even though you are supposed to have a fossa biologica by law, it still seems that you have to get permission to put one in!). It can take several weeks to get the permission from the Comune and then photos have to be taken every inch of the way to prove that it has been done properly. We`ve decided to stick to the rules and get it done properly as you do need the paperwork if and when you want to re-sell. I think we`ve been quoted somewhere in the region of e800 - 1000.

If you think there may be problems or difficulty in siting this then you may be better off contacting a geometra in any case most normal excavation companies are used to doing these. You have to make sure it's not too near the house and preferably should have a location sloping down towards it plus the space for a dispersion tube. The costs of this fundamental device can vary widely according to the amount /kind of excavation ,size of pit (see building rennovation section on installing emptying cess pit etc

Sorry to hijack this thread but does anyone know the rules regarding fosse biologiche and the water table? I have a house next to a river, the associated spring provides drinking water for a town a few miles away, and I dont want to bung in a septic tank if its going to contaminate the water supply.
Thanks
Ram
Found these links in the forum in case you haven't. Looks as though Hazel (Smiths Martina Franca) have had one put in so you could PM them. Don't think it will be cheap due to digging the rockbed in the area.
