Ciao Tutti
I have a little problem (no not catching).
I have to give an e-mail address over the phone to someone in Italy who does'nt speak English (my Italian is poor)
Spelling it out (Italian letters) is not a problem, but is @ pronounced 'at' or is there an Italian term for it.
I assume for 'dot' I can use 'punto', but how do I say 'all in lower case' I am not sure whether upper or lower case matters but better to be safe.
Thanks for any help and BUON NATALE

Saluti
Dave

Buon natale, Dave.

The @ symbol is "chiocciola" in italian. It means snail - the symbol does sort of look like a snail. I'm not sure how to tell you how to pronounce it - maybe check your dictionary. The ch at the beginning has a "k" sound and the double cc in the middle has a "ch" sound - it is a good review of the rules for pronunciation of the "c" combinations in italian.

The period in the email address is "punto" as you supposed.

I don't think I would even mention that it is all in lower case because I think most people know that.

Saluti,

Virginia

Thanks for your replies, greatly appreciated.
Pronounciation should'nt be a problem as my partner is Italian but she did'nt know the word for @
Ugo
I didn't think of sms because we only have land line number of person to send details, we may be able to get mobile number.
Thanks again and BUON NATALE

Just a very small point, but as an English teacher who has also taught beginners' Italian here in the UK I always remind students that Ch is hard as in 'Chianti'. My boozy students always seem to remember that one...

I have noticed that most Italians do not know how to make the @ sign when writing by hand. Their attempts are almost comical. Has anyone else noticed this?

Ciao tutti
Got an e-mail from Italy today, so the pronunciation of the letters and the 'snail' worked, thanks again to those that replied.
