Chat room

I've never used one but I always thought you had to enter so I can't understand anybody voting no, surely if you dont want to enter you have the option not to go in and be involved.

i think i was the first to vote yes..... its the only time i saw it at 100 % ....
....i dont really want to chat...but .... you never know...
the reason why i voted yes was that i find it slightly annoying when a thread becomes a bit of a chat because someone knows this person next door or that something or other.... not a lot annoying...but sometimes you have been interested in a posting and the replies and suddenly or slowly it drifts into irrelevance.....
... i presume a chat room will enable this irrelevance to be carried on elsewhere.... irrelevance...being my term .... but obviously relevant to the people making the posts.... i can imagine those interested in various web cams could keep in touch much more spontaneously.... and the interest in these pictures which seems to be dear to some could profit from immediate comments and replies...
thats my take on things and no i dont think everyone should be posting serious or even relevant threads the whole time...its a free world and we all have different interests ... so i can accept those too....
... i presume a chat room will enable this irrelevance to be carried on elsewhere....
The chat room will only work (I presume) if the two "Chat'ees" are both on line at the some time. If not, then they'll still leave messages in the Chat forum.
I can't see what it'll add, hence my "no" vote.

I agree with Aliena, sometime's I log on for a chat, but your not really getting that because by the time you've posted your reply, the person your replying to has just gone off and thats where the conversation ends and it could be days before a reply to your reply. Can more than two people be in a chat room at one time, can you tell I'm a novice at all this....
In reply to A newbie all over again! by Annec
would like to vote, but really do not understand how a chatroom really works,
or the real difference between it and a forum[meeting place]if some one
could take the time and trouble to explain,or am i the only one who does not
understand..

giovanni...its very simple... a chat room allows people who are online at the same time to send instant messages to each other..... ie hello gio...you reply go away john... i say gio... having a bad day...and then we get down to serious italian talk.... its basically almost instant...messages are not stored and in general there are rules and regulations about age and content.... but say the puglia people could all arrange to be online at 6.00 pm in the evening ...go into the virtual chat room and talk abot how things are going.... or the web cam set could all go online to discuss the days events....or maybe non events....you have a sort of chat room facility with windows messenger...or sms on a cellphone.... just the keyboard is easier to use on a computer...well at least for me... and messages are full of dots....loads of dots if you have the time ...no punctuaton...and funny little abreviations...which i never use because i dont know what they mean... and bad spelling... cause i just dont care... and at my typing speed it takes to long to read and write at the same time to bother going back and correcting ... so chat rooms i think can be fun...and useful... say alex and lyn could arrange their party more efficiently... and get more instant feed back on who is or not going to be around... i think as someone put it...i can understand voting abstetion... but what the heck is there to vote against...support it i say

Although I'm not a chatroom sort of person (things can change) I've voted yes because I feel people should have the opportunity, anyway I might want to have my tenpennyworth.

In general, how chat-rooms work

Any number of people can enter the chat room at the same time.

One can see who is in the chat-room

One can send a message to an individual

Two people can, by agreement, have a private chat

One can invite an individual to join the chat-room

People can thru email arrange to be in the chat-room at their chosen time (GMT being best), etc.
I agree with a former post, that a No Vote makes no sense, because these individuals are not forced to join the chat-room, i.e., they can stay away, and continue to use the forum only.
I hope this helps those not familiar with chat-rooms.
In reply to A newbie all over again! by Annec
I was the second person to vote 'yes' for the chat room, but in hindsight I wish I had said 'no'.
I think that the forum would suffer for there being a chat room as the people that post most frequently would be the most likely to use the chat room rather than the forum for their communications. The forum would then end up just being a series of newly signed up members asking 'Can I buy a house in italy for £xx,000?' and 'Can I watch BBC in Italy with my UK SKY system' etc.
and would therefore be a lot less interesting for everyone.
There are plenty of ways that people can communicate live with each other if they so wish without Italy Magazine needing to provide, fund, manage, and moderate a chat room.
Italia Chat-Room in Operation!

Until such time as Ronald will find time to create a chat-room for those who wish to chat in real-time, I have created a temporary Italia Chat-Room. This will also allow members, who so desire, to become familiar with such a feature in a limited way. Just follow this link and chat away; of course it takes a least two to tango.
http://italiachatroom.homestead.com/
Please note, no private chats are possible in this chat-room; it is bare bones only.
P.S. Ronald, please feel free to use the above link, as you see fit, for a temporary solution.
Aliena - it takes two to tango

"Aliena> so I could and probably am talking to myself"
Yes, you were at the time alone. In time others will be on as well. But, it is helpful if you have arranged with someone to be in the chat-room, ahead of time. When a chat-room is well established you will usually find somebody chatting away with a friend, etc.
It is a good idea to try from time to time to see if anybody is in the chat-room, if you made no prior appointment.
Also, look at line "Members of room" to see if anybody is in the room, other than you.

I now think along the lines of neilmcn. Originally, I was going to vote yes for the reason that it would be good for chatting and even heavy debates but on reflection valuable information for newbie’s and even us oldies that want to look up info from the past may get lost if it's not retained in the forum. I don't think it would be possible to separate the two purposes.

a total of 47 votes casted? slightly surprised when you consider over 1500
members!
can only assume that the majority stay well clear of this section of the forum.
shame really as it looks like inbreeding may set in........

no offence meant to george...but a recent thread started has very little to do with general chat about italy and very much to do with chat.... and as it now seems to be turning into rubbish about race and religion.... i would suggest a chat room would be the best place to throw it....
i think ronald did his best with alienas home page...but no one that likes to get upset about others opinions here seemed to bother... or people deciding to use it as a private address book
at the risk of upsetting half the forum who have a holiday home in puglia...things like compiling a list of puglian or apulian members could well be regarded as something that might well be consigned off to a chat room.... does anyone else get fed up opening posts with names and numbers .... and wondering what on earth they learn from it.... i have a fear that once i get to the 750 th name maybe i will have decided that this forum is not very interesting after all.... unless you happen to be waiting to get on the list...
as has been rightly pointed out there are 1500 members now ... and i often see heaps of non members listed as viewing.... remember that if the place turns into some sort of private club with no interest for the magasine owners to keep running it then maybe it will all stop....
so if you want to have private discussions...set up little england groups ...then vote for a chat room...if you want to tell people what the food is like ...why you chose italy...what life is like here in italy...your experiences of the place...comments on italian life...even italian religion health corruption or crime.... of the wonderful agriturismo next door to you ...or the best beach...or the worst in your area thats about italy.... and it seems to me thats of interest to those viewing this forum...if you can help others that are just starting and need to catch up on the knowledge you have gained thats of interest...if your a proffesional that knows all things thats a help... or have bought a house and are having no probs or lots of them... it all helps... but parties and webcams... i think are prime chat room subjects... and thats about it....
John when you are right, you are right!

John,
I fully agree with what you have said. But, I fear there is not enough real interest in a chat-room by the majority, and it appears Ronald will have a hard time to get 50 or more yes votes. My temporary chat-room got very little use or attention.

I acknowledge new life and vitality is needed but www.circoloitaliano.org.uk could well benefit from people like Aliena. They do have a 'chat' session on Sunday evenings so may I encourage you to simply......check it out and help it on it's way forward again!

Rosemary,
It looks very very quite in there!
Aliena, Out of interest why does the chat room have to be linked to here, what was wrong with the one Francis set up. Apart from it was empty all the time! Now that I have found the hidden threads whats wrong with them? Apart from it's gone really quite on forum ;)
How often would enough people be about at the same time to join in, I quite like the delay so I can catch up on the gossip and put in my 2p worth! Spose as the gossip upsets so many then maybe yes to chat room but on the otherhand as it's so quite on the forum thses days maybe a no! Oh blimey I dunno!
Anyway were the h*** have you been! ;)

Yes! it is currently very quiet in circolo italiano at present BUT it didn't used to be!I came to know about this site through 'Italymag' and as I said earlier.....it needs fresh input.
Alas! I did try to get into their 'chat' session at their set time on Sundays and Tuesdays a while back but was unsussessful in making contact......my fault - tho' I could be seen!!!!
Nothing wrong with 'chat' anticipated to commence here, but this another or extra option.

Is anyone out there on Skype - the free internet telephone service?
http://www.skype.com
It's best on a high speed connection.
just curious

In reply to A newbie all over again! by Annec
yes, Aliena I voted yes a while back because it's a choice. I'm not even sure if I'll use it personally but you never know.
I do agree with some of the concerns that discussions that help advise all of us might be lost but I hope the chat room will be more for fun and friendship and the forum will remain as vital as ever for its great advice and information. I know I need tons of help and advice!
Will there be specific times for it or just catch as catch can? Topics?
Also since it seems another site already has the set-up for a chat room, could that be enough?
I was curious about skype because it's another way to communicate - more on the lines of a PM.
reading the different views is always very enlightening.
Who knows who will or wont use the Chat room if we get one? No-one will be forced into using it. That's definitely not anyone's desire.
It's simply another option.. an option to have the freedom of choice.. of speech.. of thought. No more.. no less!
The technology is available. Give it a chance.. then if you don't want it.. don't use it! Perhaps even Aliena wont use it. That's not important, but maybe in any democracy.. the freedom to have choice is.
Just 2.. or possibly 3 more votes.. and everyone gains.
I too voted YES some time ago. It can only speed up communications and will take the 'general chit chat' unbeloved of some members off the general forum. Why not?
In reply to A newbie all over again! by Annec
Me thinks Ronald is possibly a molto furbo chat room maker!
Perhaps he asked for more than 50 votes.. 'cus he realised how difficult they would be to get and thought he would never have to do any of the hard work..
Where he went wrong.. he forgot.. Aliena has been to Naples once or twice.. and learnt a thing or two.
Chat room please Ronald! :D
:) :p :)
Aliena,
I must say you were indeed the driving force, regarding this prospective project! If I ever run for any public office, I will engage you as my Campaign Manager.
Thanks are also due to all of you who voted with or without the force by Aliena. I even thank all the negative votes, because you showed an interest; enough to prompt you to vote.
Ronald, I know when all is said and done, we will all be proud of your work.
I propose Aliena as the Monitor/Manager of the "Temporary Chat-room" and later for the real thing. Your vote on this is important. Perhaps Ronald can set up a graph to show the results. I hope Aliena would accept this Gig.
In reply to A newbie all over again! by Annec
Because I have spent so much time in the Bitching Thread recently.......just thought I'd throw this in......how many of the 52 that voted wanted it to chat and how many voted to get the drivel of the forum! :D
Oh well... majority rules.. or somat like that..
Anyway.. don't spend too much time in the room Trulli.. 'cus I doubt there will ever be anyone in there.. but that wasn't the point.. or was it? ;)
:) :)
The chat-room is meant for more than one individual signing in at the same, or near same time, in the beginning. It takes a little time to create the chat-room culture. After a while chances will improve to find a chat already in progress. It's like on the dance floor, somebody has to walk out, even though the floor is empty. As I said before, arrange the timing with a friendly character first, and then sign in and wait for the other to enter as well. At present two individuals can enjoy pretty much a private chat. Have fun!
If you guys get negative already, why would Ronald spend the time?
Me get upset?

You misunderstood our posts.. honestly!!
Hmm.. hang on.. actually, you didn't misunderstand.. because Trulli and Aliena didn't make it clear.. didn't explain what we meant.. 'cus only we understood what we meant.. but it wasn't negative.
I was careless and forgot to post clearly.. so everyone would understand what we meant! It happens all the time on here.. that's all it was.. no negatiity.. just careless typing. Ti giuro!! I apologise if you got upset! (Wow! Aliena apologised!)
Anyway, we stepped out and into your temporary chat room this evening.. and very nice it was too! We had it all to ourselves and we erm.. chatted.. even had a cup of coffee and spent a penny or two in the bar! And.. guess what.. we even chatted about Italy once or twice! I reckon it was a result! I can't speak for Trulli.. she can do that very well for herself!
You know Aliena wouldn't usually take the time to explain anything.. however, the Dow Jones has now reached 400..
Perhaps cryptic.. I know, but Aliena is a women of her word! ;)

we have a chat room. I have no idea if you will use it - but you can try it out here:

You need to be logged in to the forums to access it (naturally).
Let me know how it goes.

question is aliena... have you been a good girl this year?
I'll see what's possible :) - Also if we get more than 50 yes votes I will try extra hard to set it up for you.
