I would explore the possibility of Europcar. Their website is fairly efficient.

Kym,
What size vehicle are you planning on taking. We have enough to about half fill a 7.5 ton truck. Would you be interested in sharing? We are in Derby and we are going to Gavedo - just a bit south of you I think. PM me if you're interested.

Van Hire

When we looked into this we worked out for the time we needed to hire, it was going to cost over a grand so we bought a van, got good breakdown cover with the idea of selling it once we got back. We didn't sell the van in the end and still have it but that because we may go back in it some time early next year.
ciao kim try sixt at www.e-sixt.co.uk/main?/content/travel they are the cheapest i have been quoted you will have to phone them for an exact price as the internet quotes are for uk they add approx 40% on to the price plus a charge for breakdown cover but milage is included hope this helps let me know how you get on ciao marco:)
