2250 Martina Franca Uvpc double glazing

Sunny old Golborne and took them over in our van. Neal's in the trade anyway and instead of the 10,000 euro quoted, took 11 windows and two new doors over at a cost of £1800 plus travelling expeses.........Here they are

you will find small workshop factories all over italy that make double glazing units.... in general either wood or aluminium.... and in general as has been said quite a bit more expensive than uk glazing

...i think when you look into it a bit further that in a sense there is a reason...there are laws and regulations here on the standards of fitments anyway... so that has to be followed and in general they become quite a bit more complicated anyway...

in general if you want to live comfortably here the windows consist of three elements outside shutters...both for security and to keep the sun off... glazed units with glass that has heat retentive and reflective qualities ...and in between the two insect screens...because open windows in the summer are not a good idea due to biting bugs... upvc is not often used because its life expectancy is generally much lower than aluminium because of the intense heat in the summmer... and cheap wood fittings will not last either...so it has to be very good hardwood ...the problem with this over aluminium is the maintenace aspect...

anyway to give you another idea of costs we had double glazed units fitted with shutters and screens in fourteen windows.... four of them being double balcony doors for a total cost of e14,000 ...all made to measure ....

...another thing about doors to the outside here is that often they are very secure... ie they have metal plating on one side or internally within the door... and the number of bolts that go across is quite astounding... that coupled with the shutters tend to make houses very secure.... its something italians seem to think is required.....

... its just that when you start to compare things here as against england or anywhere else ... the story often gets a bit more complicated.... italian laws and weather are different....

Both doors do have the 5 lever mortace locks as John mentions so security no problem. At the moment house is empty so nothing to break in for.[/I]

We have used the Light Oak PVC as is more heat resistant than the Dark Oak PVC, we have seen enough properties in Italy using these windows to be confident of it use and as I say, Neal is in the trade. Front door is actually covered by a large veranda and the back door is having a pagolla errected so both will be out of direct sunlight anyway.

We recon with the shutters and the outer doors still to be fitted we've still saved a packed which will then go towards the cost of something else.

There are a couple of window places on the road from Ostuni to Caravigno. The first is on the right as you drive out of Ostuni and the other is in Caravigno centre at the traffic lights, they also make spiral staircases and unfortunatly I don't know the names.

paula... the point of the posting was in reallity too explain differences... i am sure the uk has laws on the quality of the insulation properties of the windows that are now fitted the trouble is the houses in question are in italy and i have no idea if they match up....

i think what i was saying was that it is hard to compare like to like ...because it doesnt exist.... and rather than think everything here is horrendously expensive there are often reasons behind it... italians do use plastic windows... but when planning work it is worth taking into consideration the longevity of the work undertaken.... and in general the preferred option here is aluminium...much the same as say the guttering is metal ... a favorite nowadays here being copper... instead of plastic...again because of the sun.... all plastic despite being much more resistant to uv rays these days will go off much quicker here than in the uk.. i presume a reason many move here is the heat in the summer.. so if you only want to fit windows once its might be well worth while for some to spend the extra.....

i am not saying that you didnt do what is right for you... just saying there are elements beyond price to take into account.... and that being informed of the differences can help with choices
