Danny,
Malpensa is probably better than Linate, as Gary says.
Neither is particularly good for staying close to, so I'd suggest you hire a car. [I have found that the Kelkoo site gives great bargains for car hire]
You could go to Lake Maggiore [easier to get to by car from Malpensa than Como - which requires using the Milan 'Ring Road'] - plenty to do there for a few days.
Probably the best place to stay is Stresa [plenty of hotels at all prices], and you can tour from there - by road or steamer [or train].
Lovely area
Remember, if you are near Milan [or probably anywhere else in Italy] over Easter - the roads get very busy.
Good luck

Actually, I find Linate handy. It's €3 and 20 minutes on the bus to the Central station and train fares are cheap. Aosta would be too far for you, but as an example its only €10 single. The Treni d'Italia website: http://www.trenitalia.it/ can help with times and fares.

I could not agree more. While both lakes have their pros, there are more to Maggiore, particularly in the Stresa/Golfo Borromeo area. Stresa has some interesting little shops.
It really is a stress-free zone.

thanks everyone for the advice !!
I will do some research into places to stay - my girlfriend has relatives in Switzerland near the border of Italy so that could be worth looking into.
Hi Danny.
you would not go wrong if you flew to malpensa and headed for lake como for a couple of days, base yourself there and you could do a day trip to milan, it's only about 1 hour by train.
Linate is central to milan and unless you want to spend 3 days there then would avoid flying there.
I love milan, have been about 20 times but it's not everyones cup of tea.
regards.
Gary
