this really didn't answer Gerry's question though any hotel offering to satisfy both the demands of businessmen and turists should be interesting

Don't fight guys! I'm grateful for any and all information and i'm gradually working through the translation. The location of the hotel was the most important consideration for me. I'm hoping that the station at Ancona is big enough to have a ticket office. If not, maybe the tourist side of the hotel will be able to help.

To buy the train ticket on line - try

It seems that you can get a 'ticketless' ticket for E6.37. The site also gives the timetable

Yes, Ancona railway station is a reasonable size and does have a ticket office, as well as self service ticket machines, that are in several languages including English. As mentioned you can buy in advance on line, but also no problem to buy on the day.
The Albergo Fortuna is one of several hotels directly opposite the station.

Hi Gerry
Don't know if it is the same in Urbania but here in the Castelli Romani just south of Rome all tickets need to be bought in advance from the Tabacchi -both bus and train. You then validate them by getting them stamped by a machine on the platform - if there is one. Our local station has neither ticketr office nor validating machine so the idea is you buy tickets in advance and write the date on them as you board the train. At xmas we were unable to buy tickets as all Tabacchi were shut and then we had snow .. so we got on the train to Rome anyway (all 5 of us) I had heard that in such circumstances you should find the guard and get him to issue a ticket so sent hubbie off. Guard laughed and said if you haven't got a ticket, I'll have to throw you off the train - go back to your seat and I'll come to you in a moment - he never did, we didn't pay but this is not to be recommended
