2354 New in Italy

Hi

My wife and I bought a property in Umbria 2 years ago, but have yet to get the opportunity to spend more than a few weeks at a time in Italy. Unfortunately I'm still working at present but hope to retire soon and we are looking forward to spending much more time in Umbria. So far my experience in the DIY and contractor area has been difficult at times (mainly due to my linguistic ineptitude), but very amusing. I've had ongoing problems with drainage/sewage and spent 2 days washing from a bucket when the well pump stopped working. I haven't yet fully resolved the drainage problem, but did manage to cover myself from head to foot in sewage when I eventually found the end of the drainpipe!! On the latter point can anyone advise on septic tank matters i.e. regulations, suppliers etc.,

Regards

Hi Roddy,

Personally I don't know about septic tanks but I've done a search for you for previous posts (you can use the 'search' facility on top right just underneath your Private Messages link) - there have already been a few threads about this exciting topic:

I'm sure you'll find some information there.

Good luck!

Good afternoon,

We are moving to southern Italy in march and want to take our uk car with us, the only problem is i cannot get insurance from uk companies which will cover us. Has anyone out there been through this and have a solution? Your help would be much appreciated.

best regards Vince, Yvonne & Megan:)

Try www.stuartcollins.com. I think they're based in Cardiff. They use AXA insurance to get cover for a 12-month green card -- most insurers will allow you a maximum of 90 days cover abroad per annum for a British-registered car.
Our insurance cost us about £500 for two named drivers with considerable driving experience on clean licences; expensive, but that's the way it goes. We found the company very helpful.
People will tell you that all you need is regular insurance in the UK, and then just take the car abroad with a green card. But this will not cover you for a full year.
However, if you are actually moving to Italy, why not establish proper residency and then insure your car there through an Italian or other company.
We were forced to go down the UK insurance route because we were not establishing permanent residency in Italy (the old problem: you can only insure in Italy if you're living there, and you can't insure your car in the UK if you're leaving it in Italy [without a specialist policy such as Stuartcollins.com provide]).
Good luck with your move.

If you are over fifty? Saga might be able to help as they certainly used to offer a policy that was for extended (much more than 90days)travel outside the UK.
