2168 ADSL Via Satellite

Hi Ya
I need to have ADSL; the only ADSL connection I can get is via Satellite, just wondering if anyone else is using this type of connection and if it is reliable.

I am looking at skyDSL 1,000 kbps at £4.90 a month, which seems very cheap compared with Alice SAT 641 Kbps at 14.95 Euro p/m, or am I miss something.

The only thing I noticed was 2 ** by the price then no indication of what it meant - was it only an introductory offer?

Hi GlenB
Thanks for pointing out the 2 **.
After a Google search found a review on skyDSL, which explained that the system is download only you still a dialup connection for upload.
I wonder if Alice Sat works on the same system.

This is the common arrangement for affordable domestic satellite DSL: low speed telephone connection for up-link, high speed down-link via satellite.

But bear in mind that you must have an up-link in order to get anything sent to you via the down-link. The Italy Magazine Forums list will only appear on your screen if your computer has asked that it be sent to you.

Yeah it works that way. Although now there is a new flat subscription you can do it's called Teleconomy Internet and basically you pay a flat fee of 12Euro for a pstn or 24Euro for an ISDN one.

It is the very first 24/7 internet flat offer and you never never get disconnected there are people that been up more than 2 weeks.

At the moment seems that the dial-up is still the best solution for people who dont have ADSL coverage. With ISDN if you use both channels you go to 128K

It's very controversial and competitors of Telecom went to court to stop it selling it but they lost the case.

Unfortunately, Teleconomy Internet is no longer available. See my thread here

Thanks for that information Dave. I'll delete my post.

Hi Dave
Thanks for the info; I'm back out in March to get a phone line connected.
I will need ASDL eventually, so I'll just keep searching on Google for a site that can tell when it will be available in our area.
