try in consumer issues section, or use the search facility at the top of the page, there are a couple of companies which can help, but, can't remember them...

We used www.stuartcollins.com who are based in Cardiff or Swansea. They use AXA insurance to get cover for a 12-month green card -- as you say, most insurers will allow you a maximum of 90 days cover abroad per annum for a British-registered car.
Our insurance cost us about £500 for two named drivers with considerable driving experience on clean licences; expensive, but that's the way it goes. We found the company very helpful.
People will tell you that all you need is regular insurance in the UK, and then just take the car abroad with a green card. But this will not cover you for a full year. I'm assuming you want to use the UK-registered car in Italy, but don't have Italian residency status.

Try Liverpool Victoria, sorry don't know the contact details, but I am sure they will be easy enough to track down. They offer an insurance policy for the use of a car overseas, the first six months have fully comp cover and the second six months third party. As far as I know, the premium is not too horrendous.

You could also ask the AA, and SAGA - I believe that both do annual policies

More>than offer up to 364 days cover - ie virtually a year. I'm with them and hope to use this part of their cover. If I get any more details I'll post them, but they're a little way down my to-do list at the moment.
