Just a word of warning; I assume you are from the UK.
Your Domicle and the location of your assets are crucial components in any decisions regarding your estate. As is the treaty between Italy and UK on the taxation of estates where there are assets in each country or where both countries claim the deceased was domicile under their laws.
It can all get quite complex.

if you inherited property in Italy you had better look into usucapione law. If you pay the taxes on the property you may be paying them for someone else's benefit.

There is no inheritance or donation tax in Italy.
If there are real estates (houses, lands etc) the heirs only pay a 3% tax on their cadastrial value for the Land Register.
No taxes on other assets (money, bonds, shares etc)
