2537 Any Suggestions?
Just bought a place in Italy (Abruzzo), mainly as a holiday home, but with a long term plan to move there in a few years.
Anyway, having had a varied career, was interested in what my options are for employment. As opportunities have arisen, I've had a tendancy to take them and also just taken what came up when there were no opportunities.
I started as an apprentice electrician and got qualified, moved into the office and did an HNC in Building Services (electrics, plumbing, heating & ventilation), got laid off and spent a bit of time doing some plumbing (not gas), ceiling fixing and dry lining work, ran my own company as an electrician for a while and then got a job as a consulting engineer. Still employed as a consultant, finished the degree in environmental engineering (covers technical parts such as wind energy, biomass, solar water heating, photovoltaics etc etc.) Also have an interest in a Cartridge World store (Don't ask how it happened, just did!) Also got NVQ level 5 in construction project management.
Anyway, my problem is that I look at Italy and can't really understand how to start considering what I would do for employment.
There appears to be a lot of bars on the more practical elements such as plumbing, electrician etc. Dont have a problem running through a few courses to convert qualifications, but would need these to be distance learning. In the UK these are governed by the CITB, but is there an equivelant in Italy?
The role of a consulting engineer (lighting, fire alarms, Intruder alarms, CCTV, power systems, HVAC etc) does not appear to exist in Italy as these are generally covered by the Geometras who seem to be a jack of all trades (No offence meant)
Don't really want to spend my life putting up paritions and ceilings and sticking ink into cartridges is mind numbingly boring.
Anyway, the point of this thread is that I have a lot of things I can do and no idea where to start planning for anything. Just thought I'd stick it on the forum and see if anyone had any suggestions, advice, experience etc about recognition of qualifications and so on.
Andy
How about consultant on off-grid electricity supply? :-) Lots of remote properties, expensive grid connections, and even more expensive fuel costs. I may be guessing but the economics in Italy seem more favourable for it than in the UK.
