when you arrive in Rome walk around - many large bars have atmosphere and if you avoid Piazza Navona and other main sites - they are not particularly expensive - Campo dei Fiori is good at night for the under 30s - many bars have music and you really don't need to be in the via Veneto area (full of oldies) because with good walking shoes it's a 30-40 minute walk (through Rome with all its attendant surprises )If you're ultra fit ( in the walking sense)Trastevere is a huge experience - lots of restaurants and bars to fit every budget and they party till LATE

Theres a good restaurant near the Colosseo - come out of the Metro - cross the road to the Colosseo - and walk up the road (left out of the metro) - (this is a small road that runs parallel to the main highway - cross a main street - there is a restaurant on the corner - continue up the road (the main highway is on your left) - you pass a pizza place on the right keep walking up and there is a restaurant - I dont recall it having a name - but it has frosted windows -and is run by Hells Angels - really good atmosphere - and they ply u with Limoncella at the end! - Very popular with the locals
You might want to go earlier in the day - dont know if you can make a reservation - but it was packed last time I was there

We stopped in Rome last January and visited a restaurant which was near our hotel. It is near the Spanish Steps and the Trevi Fountain so not far from the Via Veneto. It was very good ,very reasonable and full of locals. We went there 3 nights running so you can't say better than that! It is called Trattoria Gioia Mia and is on the Via degli Avignonesi 34-35.

I didn't know there was a harry's bar in Rome but I have been to its more famous namesake in Venice several times...it is OK at tea-time for people watching but dinner-time is a bad joke...cramped segregted tables, surly watering, tepid food and plenty of booming voices...best thing was the bread rolls!
no wonder you want not expensive resturants would have loved tickets but they were very expensive on the net - have a good time
