2615 Dubai in Tuscany?

I had read that all number of folk are up in arms over a plan to build a Dubai-style horseshoe-shaped cement island off the coast of Forte dei Marmi for new properties.

Is this tosh?

Has anyone else heard of this?

How hard is my leg being pulled?

The developer's case in Dubai for this hideous and ecologically disastrous eyesore is that there is insufficient natural coastline. Surely the same argument can't be used in Italy?
