I breastfed until my eldest was 15 months old and I became pregnant with number 2. I never had a stare or a bad look. I remember one day I was feeding her at a bar, sitting outside in the sun and the waitress saw me, ran inside and grabbed me a glas of water. She said I had to keep myself hydrated. It was a wonderful feeling after all of the horror stories I heard from friends in the US.

Breastfeeding.
I found that to breast feed in Italy is just taken as the most natural thing to do. I remember when I had my son on the breast his papa would come in from work with a crowd of his workmates just to see his Son & Heir and inevitably I would be breastfeeding. No one turned a hair. After all no ones "sees anything" baby's face being in the way.

I think that brest feeding is the most natural thing in the world, as long as its done with some discretion and your child isnt eleven (like the recent tv documentary. Its afterall why we have breasts.

Thank you for the all the replies! I watched that documentary too! If i can manage a few more months to give her the best start possible i will be happy. Can't wait to get to Italy again and take my girls,But will wait until the baby a little older. Then hopefully i can take her to meet the family!
ciao we have two boys 1 @ 9 months the other now 4 and have been going to italy for a good few years my wife breast fed both in italy without any problems at all no snide commments or funny looks , then we moved on to potty training for the eldest which we accomplished on a two week holiday in le marche carried a potty around for the whole two weeks no problem, the only funny look we got was when he decided to do his buisness on the beach volley ball court but we were more mortified than anyone else. hope it all goes well ciao marco:)
Was in an italian friends cafe yesterday, and had to feed my 10 week old baby and there was an italian lady who took an interest and cooed over her and praised me up for successfully breastfeeding her. She added that italian ladies have no concerns about breastfeeding outside, or in public etc, is this the case or was she just being supportive?I have feed her in a bus shelter, but at the moment it is a bit cold for that!!I haven't had a problem so far feeding her when i am out and about and as she is feeding every hour during the day and going 5-8 hours at night i am lucky its successful. Anyone brave enough to discuss this subject and let me know about italian thoughts about breastfeeding?
