Have the rats been there all that time, or are they a recent introduction?
In reply to A newbie all over again! by Annec
Anyways, the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies (which included the old Kingdom of Naples) was conquered in 1860/1 by the Kingdom of Sardinia, shirley;)

Typical, get your facts wrong, and then when someone points it out, just ignore!
Tell me, is it true that ignorance is bliss?

Interesting, did not know this. I assumed they were conquered as part of the unification of Italy in 1869.

Aliena, shall we adjourn to the Spacconapoli thread and get out of Tink's way!

Shouldn't that be Ratti di Napoli?
In reply to A newbie all over again! by Annec
But this is rather selective no? Your original assertion that the Kingdon of Naples was taken over by the Kingdom of PIEDMONT was wrong. :)

Was Piedmont a kingdom? I thought that would have been Genoa?

There is a very good book "The Italian City Republics" that deals with the early medieval period.
Obversers at the time commented that when the Italians did not have an external enemy to fight with, they would start to fight amongst themselves ;)
No change there then;)
This made for great fun in those cities which sported great towers (such as can still be seen in Ascoli Piceno) - fights would break out amongst rival families with bows and arrows, fireballs, insults etc being hurled between their respective towers. Must have been quite a sight. :)

Well OK, but pizza say it all really..
Neopolitan pizza - just dough and some spaggy tomato sauce - bit of cheese if your lucky. Poor man's grub.
Venetian pizza - olives, salami, artichokes, capers.....yum yum, altogther a much more appertizing experience! :)

The Kingdom of Sardegna also consisted of Piemonte and was thus called called Piemonte-Sardinia, which was once considered to be the most advanced state in Italy. The Kingdom of Sardegna also recovered Nice and Savoia, and acquired Genova.

Must have been a poor pizzeria - the one we go to is a family affair just off the Via Toledo and their pizzas are great (and have cheese on).
Besides, any city that gave us something as wonderful as sfogliatelle can't be all bad...

You are the first person ever, ever, ever who has said that Venetian Pizza is better than Neopolitan ... Venice is may favourite Italian city but I have never considered it a place to eat Pizza. Whereas I salivate with the very thought of Neopolitan Pizza - there is one small establishment in Spiaccanapoli - where downstairs they sell takeaways or one can eat standing-up and upstairs they have tables and chairs - here the pizzas are almost like naan bread smaller thatn a standard pizza with a thick crusty edge. The thing to do when eating one standing-up is to tear pieces from the edge, dip them in the centre and gorge. Anybody know the name...want to tell my bro. to go there.

Was tangential cultural reference, actually. What I described was a quattro stagione (that Four Seasons for our anericam friends) which of course is the eponymous Vivaldi string quartet. Vivaldi is, of course the famous son of Venezia.
Would dream of eating pizza in Venice - even if one could get it - Venice is definitely for le frutte di mare. ;)

Reading all the new posts, I came across one where the paster had forgotten what they had copied in the short time that it took to move from one thread to another but I often can't remember whether I locked the door, turned the cooker off packed my passport and so shouldn't be critical.

I took a stab at making these about two weeks ago - got the filling right but the pastry needs more work.

Do you have a recipe?

Yup - two in Italian and one in English. Will dig them up and post for you. There is another form of the sfogliatelle that is much easier to make and I will post that one up too - it is a good confidence builder before tackling the one pictured in Aliena's post.

Is very cloudy in Napoli today. Suspect it's Aliena's fault - if anyone is able to create fug and cloud the issue its her/him ;)

Oi Tink,
They're not innocent looking webcams - that's what they want you to believe - these are the newest addition to Italy's strategic defence initiative....You know,an advanced early warning system of invasion....Hmmm, wonder if they'll spot the old spaceship?
Just thought, the one in Puglia can't be working, look at all them Albanians down there!

I see, take another swipe at the Albanian pugs.
It is well known that Naples is the latest resort for the scoundrel! :)
Very interesting Aliena - I will give to read on the Eurostar but maybe he will take the regionale so he can feel more alive - in which case he will need more reading matter - do you have anything to say about contemporary Naples.
Could you also provide a list of Neoplitan speakeasis with good live local music? That would be very kind.
