2684 Transport for 2-3 months

:o I am looking for advice please

My wife and I are looking to buy a holiday home slightly away from the major towns and to stay there for 2-3 months, a couple of times a year.

We want to make use of the cheap airfares so do not want to drive to Italy.

So to my question
When we arrive for the 2-3 months, I have no problem in hiring a car for 1-2 weeks at the airport, or even getting a taxi to the house. I certainly could not consider hiring a car for 2-3 months

What do I do for transport for the next two months after that ?

We would like to visit other towns in the area, plus the usual shopping, etc, but what do we do for transport.

Should we buy a car and leave it at the house unused for several months at a time ?
What do we do about the Car Insurance, which i see is pretty expensive ?

I am sure many people have gone through this before, so any advice is welcome

Thanks

Peugeot and Renault both have a buy back program for long term rentals. I don't know if that plan is available to citizens of the EU.

I use it all the time. You get a brand new car and are fully insured with 0 deductable.

Our brother in law purchased a second hand left hand drive car on ebay and drove it out here. Insurance not a problem if you are over fifty have saga have a policy for extended trips abroad and assume you could just tax and insure for the periods of time you were over here? Think you are the people looking to buy towards Pescara, as mentioned before again a shame. If you were in our area we would be able to suggest other possible options to you as we live here full time.
By the way welcome to the forum. Hope you find it as useful as we certainly have over the last couple of years.

:) Thanks for the welcome to the forum.
My wife and I are thinking about the Puglia area for buying as we particularly like the sun, plus the prices look good :)

You have chosen a fantastic area, we bought there last year, love it to bits and will be there next week with the kids. Welcome to the forum...Which area of Puglia lights your fire....:D

Hi Paula
We don't know Puglia, but are thinking of the San Vito... / Ostuni area's

The reason for this is we want to be within reasonable distance of Bari airport. As we live on the South Coast getting to Stanstead for a Ryanair flight to Brindisi is a 2.5 - 3 hour drive for us, whereas we can make Heathrow for Alitalia flights to Bari in 1.5 hours.

If you have any recommendation for area's, i am quitr happy to listen

Thanks and Regards

Hi Paj,
can`t help you much with the car problem. Insurance is very expensive in Italy - I think I agree that it would be best to buy & insure in the UK, if possible. By the way welcome to the forum and we think you`re making an excellent choice. We`ve lived in Martina Franca for about 18 months now & we`re very fond of the area. Maybe it`s a bit scruffy (OK, very scruffy in places) but there are plenty of other things to make up for it. Good luck in your search for a house.
