No.

Far too much thought policing going on these days ;)

Maybe it should have a post- it thingy to keep it at the top? Ronald could you sort it please. :) Ooer Stodge, your big red letters didn't come up until just now, scared the life out of me!!!

Dear sdoj,

Big red letters are the equivalent of SHOUTING on the online world and are certainly not a polite thing to do. As I said in my post (not directive) I will be removing some of the threads (not all of the threads). In particular I will be removing those of little temporal value.

Please remember that this corner of the forums was opened to allow some off topic discussion as a few of the "louder" members requested it. One of the rules is that I reserve the right to pull any thread at any momemnt (of course I can do that on any part of the forum but I made a point about it on this part of the forum).

Postings such as:

"queer in the old sense of the word ... tiddles may have had unspeakable things happen to him in his long career policing the hamster wheel and was certainly feeling giddy but he was no bloody pillow... "

or

"NOooo, anybody but preachy - she says she treats everyone equaly and we know what that is a euphamism for..."

or

"Tinker I have told you off before for putting your hands where you shouldn't. Well why don't you put the hamster back where you found it and straighten the pleats on Aliena's kilt before she gets... "

are of little temporal value and can safely be removed. Your list of links is of significant temporal value and will not be removed.

Please refraing from SHOUTING in the future and if there is a thread within "Circolo di Conversazione" that you would really like to see saved add a reply to my post.

All the best,

Ronald

Dear Mr Ronald,

You might think that some of these posts are not in the best possible taste. Some of them I don't think are in very good taste, or are very well informed. But this is the rough and tumble of life; we're all adult enough to take it as it comes. :)

Some of the wackier posts are in fact, cross references to what is going on elsewhere; criticisms that are kept out of the main threads, because we think that its not appropriate or will not get anywhere to comment directly. I can understand if there is a problem with memory being swallowed up, but this does not seem to be your rationale.

It seems that you have decided that you, and your circle of "moderators" are the sole arbiters of good taste. Well there has been some pretty off the wall things posted, and I should think that any that have been too outrageous get removed, but I don't see any justification for arbitrarily removing threads that are not deemed "temporal" (temporal - of the mind - surely includes wit as well as "serious" posts, no?).

You either let us have our fun - within reason - or insist that all postings are strictly serious and directly on narrowly defined subjects. But it seems to me that you're behaving rather like a grumpy old man who complains to the man next door that his children are a nuisance.

There, I've said my piece. Delete it at your will.

Ronald,

You are correct big red letters and CAPITALS ARE the equivalent of SHOUTING but I don't consider either of them as impolite when used in the appropriate context - otherwise why would forum designers allow us the options.

If your post was not a directive then it was certainly another rule change which was imposed without public consultation as seems the style at the moment.

I am pleased that you will not be removing all threads but just those of little temporal value - who will decide what is what - you and the other moderators or the forum?

Ronald the list of links was posted by Aliena and I agree it is of significant temporal value and should not be removed and it was for this reason that I shouted loudly. This thread came to mind because I use it often but other threads I cannot shout about because I probably won't remember them until it's too late.

However, if I do think of any threads to save in "Circolo di Conversazione" then I can't add a reply to your post (as you suggest) because you closed it the moment you posted it!

Truth of the matter is that not everyone is adult enough to take it as it comes - you should see what my inbox looks like after a weekend (when moderation is minimal) and you would understand.

Someone has to take responsibility for the running of this site and no doubt some decisions are not going to please everyone - them's the breaks.

I would like to think that most members here will see that moderators hardly ever act out of haste or personal interest. Someone has to take responsibility for what is posted in the forums - that comes down to the site administrators and the moderators. Yes, we are human and will make mistakes (hopefully not too many).

ItalyMagazine is a commercial site, and draws viewers, and posters from a broad demographic - not everyone that visits here is British, or Italian, or even adult for that matter - we need to keep the forums open and acceptable to the broadest possible demographic - part of the reason the Circolo was created. However, all registered members can see this sub-section as well so there is good reason to prune threads there on a regular basis.
