2691 Where to go for Easter

I would like to surprise my sister with a short hop to Italy over the Easter break. The last time we were there over Easter we spent it in Naples, so I would like to try somewhere else.

Knowing that most cities do shut down over the Easter weekend it would obviously be handy to be in a city that you can stroll around in and take in the sites without having to worry about getting into museums and/or galleries for much of the weekend.

I was hoping that forum members might be able to recommend cities that would be pleasant to visit at that time of year.

Hi Sano,

Try Milan - some of the shops are shut on Sunday, but you can go for a walk down by the canal in the south of the City, or visit the Dummo, or go to one of the parks. Milan has lots of Galleries - the tourist centre is next to the Dummo right in the centre.

Flights are easy, and the train from Bergamo takes about 40 mins if you fly with Ryanair, but it only costs a few Euros (90E for a taxi to the centre).

If that isn't enough, tell her to have a shopping trip to Prada, or visit Armani.

what about Rome? Far from being shut down at Easter, it's where everything is happening and the weather is usually glorious -we'll certainly be there

Genoa - lots of great palazzi and galleries. Not to mention the small japanese museum with an ex ambassador to Japan's amazing collection. You could stay in the centre or somewhere like Pegli or Nervi with seaside walks in hopefully seasonal sunshine and direct railway connection into Genoa.

On the other hand Sanremo is fun to stay in, sea, shopping and entroterra giri.

Hi Sano,if you've not already tried it i'd suggest going to Sicily -Catania the city's had a fantastic face lift there's lots to see and if warm enough a day trip to Taormina or up Etna are fantastic,i think i've got a good b& b address for catania centre in an old baroque building.something really different and no brtits....

Dare I say, dare I say I went to Granada last year and Seville the year before, both Alhambra palaces where stunning and the weather was very kind. Seville has the famous prossesions which are frantic, apparently you have to dive into a bar to avoid the burrens (packed crowds not western ireland), its a moorish delight with lush tropical like vegitation, palm trees and a really exotic feel. We flew to Jerez its half the price (BA) and a short and efficient train journey (puts our filthy, late and expensive train to absolute shame, but dont get me on that!).

However the food isnt a patch on italian food.

Otherwise Florence is fabulous during Easter, if you extend your holiday and time it around the Uffizzi being open theres so much to see and do, slip in a trip to Seina famed for the pallio and a medieval gem and perhaps even San Girimiano the metropolis of a thousand ancient towers. Try that Florentine steak, the wonderful rustia food and wash it all down with a quaffable and slightly addictive chianti...enjoy!

My personal city break favourite at that time would be Venice ... should be warm enough for wandering around all day & getting lost!

Rome's getting extremely busy around Easter and I'm not sure you'd enjoy it then as much. We loved it last week but even though we're out of season it was still very busy... :)
