Please believe me, this is a serious question, Who has been banned????
Banned

George,
I would have thought a member would normally be given a couple of written warnings and then a subsequent ban if their behavior didn't improve. What are the rules?

Recently, a members account was closed immediately, following a very severe attack on (if I remember rightly) puglians, the English moving into puglia, the numptie with the puppies and the administrators of the site. In this instance, the views expressed were deemed I presume to be serious enough to warrant immediate banning, no one seems to have queried that persons ban however.
I repeat, I am not aware of anyone who has been banned, but, have sought advice over the matter, I hope we will all know the circumstances soon.

i would like also to know has been banned... and the reason why..
i regard what has happened here over the last few weeks as almost unreasonable and the result of imposition of new regulations and moderation without consultation as handled in not the best way... really who was to know that appointing some people would cause such an outbreak of war... i guess when asking who i suspect sdoj might have caused enough upset... but cannot be bothered due to slow line speed here emailing everyone i suspect of being banned... so a bit of clarification... even explanations.. and a realisation that a bad executive decsison over new moderation without consultaion ..... has basically lead to a bit of a nightmare few weeks for this forum and the content ... which ok will pass .. and as always with life move on... but will anyone learn lessons...

I am waiting for answers myself but the member is no longer listed in member list.

George,
Your answer is pure Orwellian "doublespeak" straight from the pages of "1984" it is certainly not anything that the Plain English Campaign would endorse.
1) Surely a person who has had their account closed is by definition a banned person in fact you say so: "the views expressed were ... serious enough to warrant immediate banning" but then you go on to say: "I am not aware of anyone who has been banned".
2) Surely this thread is querying why that person has had there account closed but you say: "no one seems to have queried that persons ban"
3) Even the editor's comments are not clear: "edited due to badly worded response" - did you mean us to understand that the original text of your post was badly worded and that you had therefore edited it - why didn't you simply say: edited: original was badly worded ?
I have been contacted privately by a forum member who feels that they have been banned, however, the member appears on the "Who's online section", and as they can send PM's it does not appear as though a ban has been imposed, I am still seeking clarification from the administrator.

Haven't heard either of anyone being banned (this week? last week? which week? are we talking 1 or 2 members?)... am as curious as everyone else!!

Was "glitched" assumed banned..not banned...will be soon, way things are going round here :)
...hope that clear things up ;)

No one has been banned. Please all take it easier or at least wait for Monday before posting demanding questions. Wishful Thinker (which I believe is meant to be the person who has been banned) should be able to post just fine. For future reference banned members have "Banned" written under the username.
Aliena, I really do not want things to get any more interesting in the sense that there is constant arguing between a very small group of people. The forum has 1700 members but I seem to be spending time on the same small group.
In fact, in an effort to get things as quiet as possible the idea of closing Circolo di Conversazione seems as a possible course of action. (Before anyone complains we would of course be saving any thread that has valuable information).
Since we now have a chat room discussions that are not really relevant to the topic of Italy can take place there or through PMs or through e-mails.
It seems that the Circolo has become the place to carry fights out or to complain about other members and that was really not its original purpose.
This would allow us to moderate the forums much better and there would be no gray areas.
Thoughts?

Thank you Ronald, Well there you go then, can't believe much on here. The information I was given didn't sound much like glitches to me. I take it the name disappearing in memebers list was a glitch too.
At least now we will know exactly what is going on if a situation like this happens again, with the word banned under the name, assuming the name is still there of course. ;)
You see the thing is Ronald this all leads me to think that one way or anothere the have been some porky pies. With your new rules and clear communication to members and moderators, I'm sure this will not happen again because everything will be clear and transparent.
With this in mind hopefully I will not need to ask demanding questions as you put it.
As Circolo di Conversazione has lost it's sense of humour then closing it would not be an issue for me. :)
Ciao Ciao
Managed to figure out what happened

All these complaints about Wishful Thinker's banning made me curious and I checked our records to see if he was truly banned.
Actually what happened is that Wishful Thinker tried to change his e-mail address. This meant that the system would not let him back in until he had validated that e-mail address. A natural precaution to ensure that you own the e-mail address you list.
This in turn seems to have led him to creating a new user with which to login.
Eventually he figured all this out and is now working normally.
Quite interestingly he has not mentioned any of this to us.
In reply to A newbie all over again! by Annec
Glad that it is all sorted out. But why close the Circolo di Conversazione, surely even though this forum is mainly about Italy we still can have a humourous side which can be used to let off steam, after all we all have steam? not to mention the need for a giggle? I agree that personal attacks have no place here but surely humour does? Thoughts..........

I think I do agree with you Baggio - but I need to consider whether the more quiet members appreciate all this.
It is also sad to see that Winshful Thinker has allowed people to attack moderators and has not come forward to say what exactly happened. This makes me doubt his intentions. If the fun is just the exchange of friendly banter (italy or non-italy related) that is fine. But if the game is to simpy challenge the forum then that is not very welcomed.

Now now Ronny..
Whats good for the goose..
Give Tinks a chance.. he is not online and probably wont be until the morning and whatever it was.. I guarantee it wouldn't be an intentional ploy from him. He may just feel embarrassed to say so after all the hoohaa.
We love him.. and Aliena definitely needs him to keep the space ship in good repair.. he's the only one who can get the damn thing to fly! :D

Yes extremely red faced, and was trying to keep it quiet. The reason is that when I updated my email address, I typed it slightly wrong (.com not .co.uk), so I never got the email, and therefore never verified it. Just didn't put two and two together. However, neither was there any message on my account to say why: just "you may not post" etc and in the Chatroom "you've been banned"
But the reason that I updated it in the first place, is a result of some very heavy handed "moderating" going on here, and the expectation, after the kind of messages I (and others) were getting that some kind of reprisal was immiment.
And though I sent out a message to Ronald on Friday morning, I didn't get a reply until Monday morning. For someone who is pretty hot off the mark to delete/edit postings etc., I don't really find that very helpful.
The whole atmosphere here over the last few weeks / months has become a little unpleasant to say the least. And I don't really think that its the so called "members" that are necessarily responsible.
And so the powers are going to close Circolo - why - because some of us post silly stuff there? We also post serious stuff - but in the appropriate place, and I thought that's why the Circolo was set up in the first place.
So I don't really know if I want to play anymore, with this air of paranoia, and over-sensitivity.
To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:
A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted
In the words of the great Groucho - I wouln't want to join any club that would have me as a member ;)

That is because you had not been banned - the system simply wanted you to validate your address.

You are perfectly entitled to feel that moderating was heavy handed but swearing is something we would rather avoid. Also it is a bit pointless to create another account so as to escape moderation.

yes i agree, thank you ron.
{but gio is about to get slated?}
my timing been out latley and have missed a lot of what goes on.
what has crossed my mind is football and rugby. both professional games for
"men" both have referees and lineman and both have sets of rules.
in football at the top level, well at all levels,u will find players screaming and
swearing, and at time trying to bully the ref! have always find this strange as
u will not get the ref to change his mind, and in all honesty it leads to
trouble for those concerned, and it amazes me how they just don't see it
does HARM to the them, and the game in general and sets a bad example,
that alas others then follow.
in rugby, for some reason its diferent, don't know why? i mean some of those
players could rip your arms off and stick them up your backside, but when
a dissision is made, they know its piontless to keep complaining,so very rarerly
do they bother. they know the ref is the boss,he is incharge and thats that.
rightly or wrongly, somebody has to be incharge....its something i wouldn't
want to do......:)

Football - A gentlemans game played by ruffians.
Rugby - A ruffians game played by gentlemen.

I'd say it's mainly because rugby referees have video replay backup! Players don't make a fuss cos they don't want the referee to see a replay of them stamping on other players' heads!

refereeing analogy
Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Wed, 02/22/2006 - 07:28In reply to A newbie all over again! by Annec
The Duke of Wellington once said that “the Battle of Waterloo was won on the playing fields of Eton” – a reference to the belief that competitive sports contribute to the formation of a nation’s character.
You would think that a school like Eton would house gentlemen but according to Aliena's (class ridden) defintion they do not ... Eton boys play with small round objects not the oval ball used in rugby.
Derek could be correct but how long have referees had the video technology?
I think it is more likely that the answer lies in the nature of the two games rather than video technology or social status. In soccer, the stakes are generally much higher and I don't mean just monetarily. The outcome of a soccer game often hinges on a single refereeing decision and the players and fans know that whereas that is rarely the case in rugby with its double digit scoreline.
To bring us back on analogy:
The referees in soccer may not change their minds often but they can sometimes be persuaded to consult with the linesmen to seek conflict resolution.
What has got to do with Italy - nothing much but I did see Italy w(all)op Tonga at our local soccer stadium in November.

Did you go to Eton and is that how you know Eton boys play with small round objects?
People will get confused if you use the same class ridden icons as Aliena! Define yourself in a more suitable way.

When i was in Waterloo first i met a lot of French (pilgrims?) who asserted they won the battle, then i met loads of Germans (Prussians?) who were sure ,THEY won the battle...Then we were all chucked out of the bar by a bunch of Belgians so what the Duke of Wellington said maybe relative..As for these small round things at Eton, don't know what that's about...does that mean they don't play rugby what sort of people are they?I thought Aliena's defintion quite appropriate actually and didn't see a class war lurking there.I think there may be a problem of Koala bears in here somewhere...
Now,to deperately search a link with Italy i hope you realise that it was thanks to Napoleon that the Papal forces were finally kicked out of this part of Italy driving them back to their Vatican hideaways and revealing that the papal domination of this part of the country had left it fifty years behind the rich successful and democratic Ducato di Toscana, in a state of abject poverty and abandon which lasted until the advent of Fascist government. So i'm one of those people who have a different viewpoint on Wellington and all that stuff that followed on which i was "brung up".....apologies for the digression to all...

Geo / Derek
I had dinner last night with an ex-player of the Prato rugby team and he is very aggrieved about the refereeing in the Italy Ireland
Apparently the referee made a couple of bad decisions in the second half without consulting video playback.
Is it so that the Irish press were saying that it should have been Italy's game and that the referee (an Englishman) has been retired off?
I haven't checked any of the facts ... thought I would report it as I heard it.
