Fantastic - reminds me of when I was sitting on a bus in EUR waiting for it to leave and I noticed two guys having an argument - most interesting about this was that they were both deaf - so if one didn't want to '' listen'' he turned his back- the other would forcefully turn him to face the speaker and the hand gestures were amazing - way beyond the 'signing' usually used for deaf people

Hi FBower, you're referring to EUR in Rome I guess? Your posting made me think of something I just saw in Brussels train station: two deaf persons talking to one another, two young people, having a quite intense discussion. I started looking at them and i got fascinated. It was just beautiful, it was like dancing with hands ... I looked (they were far away, so it wasn't embarassing) for minutes at them ...
I'm saying that because what you wrote might imply that other people than Italians (deaf or not) don't use body (or hand) language, which is absolutely wrong ... I don't know the British society well, apart from tv shows and movies, but I know that just watching the site i posted with all the Italian gestures made me realize that I'm doing a lot of these gestures as well, and everybody here in Belgium does .... Made me realize that a lot of body language has become so natural that we don't notice it (that is to say, we notice, because we know what they mean, but we're not aware of their importance, of their presence ...). In communication, there's much more than just the sound coming out of our mouth. There's all the rest that's accompanying the sound: the hands (yes, but not only the hands! that's another restricted way of thinking), the expression of the face, the position of the body, the movement we might make, ... Very interesting. I was teaching on these matters last year and I would still like to get to know more about it, so if someone finds any other sites on body language, please let me know.
