Thank you for that information.
The goods are for us personally. We are not selling them on.
We are not registered for IVA or VAT.
So am I correct in thinking that we will have to pay 20% IVA plus duty on a percentage of the value of the goods?
I hope this works as my new friend "Ben" from China, will be as disappointed as I will be if I can't place an order with him.

I am not sure if you have to pay IVA/VAT on personal imports - most probably not but if there is a duty tariff - this you will have to pay.
Sounds like you need to make contact with a clearance agent at the port or airport where theses goods will arrive.

20% IVA and you may also have to pay 10% Dazio "duty" if from outside the EC. Depends on the merchandise. You will most likely have to have it handled by an agent and there always the "fees". If for personnal use and you are a resident of Italy no way around the IVA.
As far the EC rules, every country is applying different rates in accordance with given guidelines. Just remember, Italy is in the EC when it is good for Italy....

I posted a link to the Italian Customs website in this thread.
I found their site informative and simple to use!
Good luck.
import tax

Thank you all for your advice!
I am trying to find out about how much import tax I will have to pay on goods from China.
Is the tax charged on the value of the goods, weight, size?
Does anyone know the rules applied in Italy?
Import duties are an EC thing so they are the same in each member country -relevant tarif is a percentage of the purchase price and depends on the commodity.
If you sell at a loss, as I sometimes do ...eek:...you can apply for the percentage to be applied to selling price.
Duty is payable on clearing the goods when VAT must also be paid - if you are not registered for Italian VAT (IVA) there is a fix which involves something called a deposito fiscale but you would need to be registered for VAT in some member country.
In Italy it is much more common (than in UK) to store goods in a bonded store (magazino doganale) and to only clear the goods when they are required. One option is to sell the goods uncleared loco deposito doganale and thereby avoid the duty/vat thing all together - your customer would have to pay both on clearing the goods.
Hope that helps.
