2808 Question for Adriatica (and other Abruzzesi)

Would you know what growing zone Abruzzo falls into?

Just curious to know what fruits would do well in that region. I realise altitude and aspect will play a role in creating microclimates that could support plants not otherwise suitable to the region but what would the normal crops be for that area?

Basically, is it peach or pear country?

John seems to thrive in the region.......are you impugning him & implying he's a fruit?

the whole of the eastern side of italy is a continental climate... which basically means not as hot as one would think maybe in the winter...

the answer depends on the height and the proximity to the sea... peaches tend to suffer with the dampness so therefore they are not huge delicious looking clean fruits here ...rather smaller and often stained on the outside...

but the closer to the coast and sea level the better they grow... as with olives the bigger fruit down by the coast the smaller fruit on the hills...the mountains above say 550 - 600 metres not many... there are exceptions...

again vineyards follow the same pattern ...the hills neare the coast producing the better wines or at least the grape more abundant...

in our garden apart from obvious apples and pears, there are plums, pomegranites sharon fruit, figs, olives and grapes next door has peaches...

we can grow tomatoes outside easily, very hot chile, peppers melons aubergines...

we cannot grow bananas but i could get driven that way

Thanks for the reply Adriatica,

I was really just hoping the climate wherever I end up would be able to support clingstone peaches and nectarines along with the more common Mediterranean fruits. I think with careful homework and selection of land that will be quite possible.

Our land in Manoppello has 9 olives, a fig, mulberry, and loquat it is about 450 meters. But its very sheltered.the olives are fantastacilly healthy despite receiving no attention for years.

I hope to plant some basil/tomartoes this year just for when we are there but Ive got a horrible suspicion (tracks, droppings) that wild boar frequent our 'garden'!

We are really keen gardeners and I am really looking forward to planning a new garden in Italy.I've noticed a very promising Garden Center between Manoppello Scala and Cheiti Scala on the road to Pescara that runs paralell to the motorway.I was also told it was possible to buy fruit trees from the forestry dept in the Maiella Park and perhaps get info on the best types to plant?

good luck!
