2874 rats again

I know someone else posted on rats but I would welcome any new advice on my rat probs.

Basically in our house is a dresser in the drawer is a cotton rag,in that rag is a nest and in that nest there are baby rats!!The adults leap out when you open the dresser door!

I can see the hole where they are coming in and will block it but I am scared of evicting them before I stay in May. Is there any point in putting something in the room that will scare them off by making a noise or smell they dont like? That way when i arrive they will have scarpered!I do not want to use rat poison just to get them out of this dresser. If I move it outside will the adults follow out to tend to their babies?

HELP!!!

Kill um! or the babies will grow and move into your house too! ;)

Hmmm... You're worried about hurting rats. Could there possibly be some connection between this fact and the presence of the horrible things in your home?

If you're too squeamish to deal with vermin on your own or if the vermin are a bit too bolshie, is there perhaps someone local with a harder heart who would help you out?

And trullomartinafranca is right. If you leave things as they are, you won't have a nest of baby rats when you come back in May, you'll have a couple of adults, a bunch of juveniles and probably some more babies. In other words, the start of a colony.

Now, whose house was this supposed to be...?

Get your self to the ferramenta - preferably one of the old ones crammed with everything you can imagine. Tell them you have Topi grande and they will give you some NO RAT, and it really is called that. Some of our Italian in laws swear by it, and it was the only thing that we know, actually works.

However its not very pleasant - but you will get rid of all of them. The only other alternative are some very large humane traps loaded with chocolate - but then you have to let them go, and they are free to return, and mate again!

Good luck

What about one of those electronic gizmo's you plug in. No idea if they work, haven't had such a problem, has anybody else tried one. Here's a link. Good luck with the problem

Get an electronic pest repeller - they'll get rid of the pests efficiently and they wont' come bakc! I installed mine as I had cockroaches and haven't seen one since! I got this one: PESTX DELUXE Pest Control Pest Repeller (on this site: http://www.g55.co.uk/acatalog/pest_repellers_for_the_home.html). What it does is it makes the house very uncomfortable for these pests and unlike poison and chemicals they won't ever grow resistant to it. I think it also repels rats and many other creepy crawlies. Not flies unfortunately...

Quote from teh above site:

"The PestX Deluxe is a world leading humane pest repeller from Lentek Inc that helps provide effective pest control against: Mice, Rats, Cockroaches and many other pests."

Plug it in in the room in question (you can get one with European plug rather than English, just tell the guys on the site when you phone them - they're really helpful) and I'm pretty sure the rats will move out within a couple of weeks.

Good luck!

Simone

Its funny I should have responded to this thread this morning. A short while later my husband was at the kitchen sink when he spotted a rat sat in the middle of the decking in our garden (we're still in uk) so its a phone call to the the council for me. Whats bothering me is my son has left the garden shed door open at the weekend so its probably having a nice warm shelter from the snow.

Don't wait for the council Paula.. just smack the rat in the head with a flip flop! :D

:) :)

Personally, and i don't think i'm alone i would not live in a place with rats inside. They are very dangerous and carry diseases. This should have utmost priority. As you don't have a cat you must ensure that you exterminate them all without pity.Go to a neighbouring farmer and see if he has any class a or b poisons to put on a handful of grain this should eliminate them all babes included.Make sure any possible entries are sealed so new ones can't get in.See outside from where they may be coming (ditches, open canals, sewers, nearby deposits or whatever)if necessary inform the comune who can at no expense to you carry out a disinfection of the vicinity. In thefuture for small mice and rats the glue isquite functional spread it on a sheet of tough cardboard a lot of it in the middle piece of cheese the rat dies stuck in the glue burn the lot but don't touch the glue or rat.

Perhaps Aliena can give an old Neapolitan recipe ...waste not want not eh? ;)

Hmm..very dangerous and carry disease..sounds like your describing our own species there too Sebastiano.

Our house is more or less derilict for 10 years so one might expect the blighters to have taken up residence but I can assure you that the only place they can possibly 'reside' is in this particular dresser! I do not plan to live there with them even english vegetarians are not that stupid!

My own experience with rats who do from time to time try and move in with my chickens and greenhouse is that they can be detered. The reality is that rats are all around us even if you dont see them..I remember when we were in a local cafe in Tuscany my daughter then 11 went to use the toilet..we heard a scream and she can running out.A rat had suddenly appeared in the pan!!

Thanks for the info on the sonic stuff I will see if I can get some installed!

Oh and yes Sebastiano did have a good point..always take those latex gloves with you when you are viewing houses as any rat/bat droppings you touch can make you extremly ill.Or take some hand wipes.I was quite amazed last year when I'd been round old houses which rats must have been in to see the person with me not even wash their hands etc! Then pick cherries and eat them!

Kill them! A friend of my parents died of Weils disease when renovating an old house close by. He became ill, thought he just had a cold / flu etc. Eventually went to bed expecting it to pass, typical man wouldn't go to the doctors, eventually got so ill his wife took him to the hospital. Cut a long story short he eventually died, left a young son behind. They are disease carrying vermin, please don't let them survive, you never know.

I had this problem when I was at my place at Xmas and a few things were apparent:
1. Electronic deterrents don't work. They will annoy them for a while but they just learn to deal with it and won't be deterred for long (haven't tried this but research and other peoples comments would seem to confirm).
2.banging about does seem to scare them off. Rats are very neophobic, apparently, and generally stay away from things they don't know.
3. As others have said - this is no time for sentimentality, when all your linen has been destroyed by nesting rats you will gladly get rid of them at any cost.
Around our way I think you can still buy a ferret that, locked in your place for a while, will find and devour rats before leaving - hopefully without going mental and doing even more damage itself!
Easiest way is just to lay poison,I'm afraid. If it's any consolation they nromally go off in search of water after poisoning so tend not to die in your bed but be sure not to leave water about and shut the toilet seat unless you want to find one or two in there!
