2898 Getting our Permesso di Soggiorno

We have been trying to find out just what kind of documentation we will need for our Permesso di Soggiorno from the questura in Massa.

Will we need to get new FBI records to show that we have no criminal records or will the fact that those were presented to the Miami Consulate in order to get our extended-stay visas be enough? I understand that sometimes it's possible to use a self-declaration form. Does anyone know whether the questura in Massa accepts that form?

Should I assume that we will need the full package of documentation submitted with our visa applications?

I looked on the questura's website and didn't see anything that looked like it applied to us at all. We don't want to work, go to school, be tourists, or move to be with family. We just want to move into our new home in Crespiano.

Any help at all will be much appreciated.

Ciao, When my wife and i moved to Ferrara last sept we had trouble obtaining our permessos, but we discovered that we needed to apply for" Carte di Soggiorno". This is what you are intitled to! But the Questura only wanted to offer us the " Permesso". So make sure you get the Carte!. Also they said our marrage certificate was not valid, because it was not stamped on the back with a Apostille, which is regconised under the Hague Convention. The police woman we were interviewed by was a little akward with us to begin with, made it not very easy. But we got there in the end!!. Good luck, nothing is easy everything we have come up against has been hard. Brendon.

Thanks, Brendon.

Where did you live before you were in Ferrara? I understood that the Carte di Soggiorno was only available to non-EU people after living in Italy for 6 years. I will certainly follow up on that.

Also, did they eventually accept your non-apostiled marriage certificate? We have a certified copy but it has no apostile. I guess that's something else we'll need to get done. I knew the simple, smooth process of obtaining visas from the Miami Consulate was too good to be true......

As a US citizen, you are correct and will haev to wait for the CdiS. For the permesso, you will need proof of medical insurance, proof of housing (your house contract will suffice) 5 pictures (they may only use 3 but they tell you 5 now), proof of funds (you can show what you showed at the consulate when requesting the visa), photocopies of all mentioned as well as your passport, a marca da bollo (tax stamp, can be purchased at the nearby tobacconists). They have the right to ask for more information so I would just bring everything you gave to the consulate just in case.

Aslo, once you have your PdiS you should get residency at your comune. This is very easy but some comuni now do require your marriage certificate so I would have that translated and apostilled (and the translation apostilled).

You can read about PdiS here http://www.expatsinitaly.com/arrival/permesso.htm

Hope this helps.

When you say Massa . Is this Massa di Maratea ? If so there is no questura here, you have to go to Potenza ( 6 Hour round trip). There is just the commune here, and they will send you to Potenza.
