I agree with what Angelo says. The airport at Ancona is very close to the main road west to Perugia though and, depending on what time of day you use it, could even be quicker than doing the GRA orbital from Rome Ciampino. The scenery is nice and its a straight drive. If you have time to fit in a trip to the impressive Grotte di Frassasi on the way, that could just clinch it.

Thanks for the replies. They have confirmed our thoughts. We will send the kids to Ancona next time and collect them from there. The Grotte is on our very long list of places to go. We can also check out the beaches.
Ancona- Perugia is a beautiful route, for the scenery, but rather slow. From Ancona to Fabriano (Le Marche), there is a highway, and it takes less than 1 hour to arrive to Umbria. There, it will take another hour to get to Lake Trasimento, although it's less distance. There are two ways, by going to Valfabbrica (curving a lot), and passing through Foligno (straight). Maybe the second is better, especially after the plane!
For the rest, flying to Ancona doesn't look like so cheap, actually. Well, it's hard to find a seat on a RY flight. I live in Ancona, but I've always flown from Forlì.
Actually, you can think about Forlì as well, since there is a road (Cesena-Roma, the E45) which is straight, beautiful and very quick, which goes through the Tiber valley. It will take about 2,5 hours from Forlì, I think, so not to exclude at all.
Hope this helps.
Ciao!
Angelo
