2906 getting married in italy

Hi all. My other half and I have been together for about eight years and never thought we' actually get married but tonight he suggested we go for it in our town hall in Northern ireland. I don't want to! I always imagined when I did get married it would be alittle special. Don't get me wrong I don't wnat the whole wedding dress in a church thing but i do want some romance. As we want to move to Italy soon I suggested we do it in Italy. Does anyone know how to go about this?! Can we just roll up while on our hols and get someone to marry us? Please tell me some romantic tales or give me an idea as to what route to take. NB money is tight!

Good luck and hope you have a brilliant wedding!

Hi Tessa

from what I know, when you marry in Italy you won't get your partner's surname (people please correct me if I'm wrong :) ). So, my German neighbour is in Italy still known by her own surname while her husband has obviously kept his surname. I don't know whether that means that back in the UK you would legally have his name regardless of where you marry. I don't know how important the name thing is for you but I would certainly want to get rid of my surname if I ever did marry (not that I'm planning to!). Also things such as prenup etc. would need investigating I'd imagine..

Hi I got married in Italy in April 2004 in Venice at a wonderful registry office in a palazzo on the Grand canal. Easy to arrange by email and snailmail - had to book the wedding online, get the banns read here at our local council offices, send this to the British Consul who provided a certificate of nul impedimenta to the Venetians. We had to pay for a translator which wasn't much and as we married on a Friday rather than a Saturday it was much cheaper. The Italian certificates of marriage are absolutely accepted in the UK - you can change your name if you like with banks etc or not as you choose. Took about 6 weeks to get it all sorted, I think the wedding cost about 350 euros. We booked a wonderful restaurant for lunch afterwards for 16 friends, managed to get a watertaxi to take us all to the lunch down the Grand canal from the wedding which was a great way to go. Flowers were cheap as chips from the Rialto market. It was a very special day - can really recommend it. Congratulations and good luck - can't imagine a more romantic place to marry. Attached a wee pic of us on the way to lunch - I'm the chubby one in the sparkly top - my lovely husband in blue!

Marina,

Thanks for the photo - you look like you had a fun day!!

We got engaged in Rome 3 weeks ago and are considering various options, one of which would be an Italian wedding...

Like you or Tessa we're not looking for the mega-kitsch wedding but prefer low-key....

A colleague told me of a company that arranged her wedding in Napoli... I don't know what they're like but she was happy with their service - http://www.magicofitaly.co.uk/mt/getHomePageSun.do

I'm not sure if I would use a middle person/company as you'd always have to pay them too...

Good luck, Tessa!

Hey thats great news Stephanie - you kept that one quiet! Did he drop to one knee at the Spanish steps? I was proposed to in the Miracoli in Venice - made me cry!
I don't think theres any need to use a wedding planner if you're getting married in a big commune where someone speaks a little English - the Venetian commune were hugely helpful to us. I did contact a couple of wedding planners and they wanted a lot of €s..If you know a nice restaurant and hotel whats to plan?
God isn't really my thing so the registry office was great - we only had to say 'si!' - I think you promise to live together, be nice to each other and look after any children. Fine by me.

Sounds like you are going native in Scotland (cobwebs in wallets, short arms long pockets and so on) or perhaps all these "mediator" stories are getting to you.

BTW - the Genovese are supposed to be the Scots of Italy in the the sense that they are good with money and that the spendthrifts are envious of them.

The saying is that if you throw a Genovese baby against a window it will hold onto the glass ... such is their propensity to grasp :D

Thanks, Marina and sdoj!! ;)

Yup Laurence went down on one knee in a quiet corner in the colosseum!! Lovely ancient ruin... where people were maimed & killed, Christians eaten by lions, and people were crazed by blood ... in short, unusual but fab idea!!
Must admit I had a tear or two in my eyes... no ring though as yet but we'll be looking at some nice Celtic designs in the next few months...

Like you, Marina, I'm not too fussed about a church wedding. Though there are some lovely little chapels out there, I'd prefer a lovely-looking Registry office. I've read about getting married in Venice and we might come back to that... Laurence loves the city!

Sdoj, as for mediators (of whatever type), I'd rather spend my money on the 'important' things at a wedding ... such as food & drink ... a nice restaurant ... or a decent kilt for my man!! :D

If I had a baby, I might teach it to hang on to glass... should try with my cats!! ;)

Congratulations Iona!

What a very romantic man you have. I know how much you researched Rome and were so excited about your trip. The fact that he could see your happiness while in Rome, and decided to add more joy for you with an engagement speaks volumes of his love. :)

If I were you, I might consider a Roman Wedding ;)

Lots of good wishes!
Dee

Congratulations Steph! I know it's not Italian, but what about getting married on.... Iona!
By sheer coincidence, I ordered a new kilt just after New Year (christmas present from my wife) and it arrived yesterday. I've been buying the other bits and pieces for the last few months. So, if you need any kilty tips... :)

Congratulations and good luck. My partner and I moved to Italy almost 3 years ago and we haven't looked back... ok just a bit, homesick etc. but we're really settled now.

Dya ken that Iona? - the canny Scots - wait until the January sales before taking delivery of Christmas presents!:D

I'm happy to take delivery of Xmas pressies all year... or even wedding pressies... ;)

Tessa,

I would do some googling to find any companies that are out there & check their websites just for ideas!! I've been doing just that for the last few weeks & saved lots of websites on my favourites. Once you're sure of a town/city, then I'd probably get in touch with the comune, find a nice hotel & restaurant (check websites such as www.virtualtourist.com, www.expedia.com or www.venere.com for feedback) and think of who to invite...

Too many choices of lovely venues though ... ;)

I think Iona is a wee bit blustery... Your wife got taste, giving you a kilt for a Xmas pressie! I'd better start saving... and have to convince Laurence to wear it too!!! :D
