ok, this is the start of some drivel by me, untill u demand i stop.

right have u heard of eurocamp? {i don't have shares}right they have tents
and static caravans all over europe [plenty in italy] ten years ago, we found
it payed to book through them the crossing as part of a short break holiday,
although it was never a short break as we would drive down to our place,
and only stay on one of there sites for 3 or 4 days.at the time it was good value and meant we could stay in other regions for very little extra cost!

these days i am not sure how cheap they are, as 10 years ago ferry crossing
were around the 300 mark, and today u can get them so much cheaper, but
if u do want to see more of the continent and in particular italy then eurocamp is an option, more so if u already have somewhere to stay, but would like to spend a few days elsewhere.

another option is to get intouch with the campsites themselves, one we have
used regular is norcenni garosole? near figline in chiantiland.
going the last weelk in august it cost us 60 euros a night for a apartment in
there large villa! which when u consider a week earlier it was double that
is good value. this site is large with 2 seperate areas and as usual it is an
hilltop location. u can have all the peace u want or all the noise.
these type of places are a great and affordable way to see italy, just go in
june or late august or september,u still get the good weather but don't have
to rob a bank to pay for it...........more drivel latter...

I don't think this thread is drivel and agree with da Boss that the title needed changing.

I'd never consider a tent/caravan site.. as I have a space ship.. but your thread has given yet another idea option for some earthlings.

Thanks for the information Gianni. :D

:) :)

but aliena, surely u park up the spaceship sometimes, and do some
sightseeing, this way u can park it up in the shade, look round and see
what spaceships others have, over a nice bottle of wine.

was going to say glass of wine, but we don't drink wine buy the glass......
or is it just me....less washing..

Gio, have you heard of Camping Cheques, we've used these in the past although in the UK you are very limited but in France and Italy you have a lot more options. You buy your cheques for your pitch in advance but you can't use then in July and August.

1 Camping Cheque - £10.30.

1 Camping Cheque is valid for one night for 2 people on a standard pitch with car, caravan tent or motorhome + electric hook-up and the use of hot showers.

Each Camping Cheque is valid for 2 years.

I prefer a birds eye view Gianni.. you never know what company you would be keeping on the ground.. and I know Alienas space ship is the best one around (even though the engine is not Italian).. so no need to compare! :D

yes i have, but do not know much about them, and i am sad to say i am
a member of the caravan club! but i don't intend to take the caravan on the
continent ,not just yet. its just these sites do have other options statics
bungalows chalets ect, and for a family are pretty good value, add to that
the sites themselves, which the ones we have stayed on have been excellent,
with the facillities, scenary, ect....

i am starting to wish i hadn't booked the ferry now, starting to fancy the idea
of taking our caravan along, would be cheaper except i would need to have
a towbar fitted to my bella,as there is no way our vectra would be happy
on such a long journey............

Why wouldn't you take it on the continent, my mum and dad are off again this year for three weeks in their 25ft motor-home, hopefully my dad can retire this at the end of this year and I've told them in no uncertain terms to p--s off in it and enjoy...this life's for living it isn't a rehearsal ;)

if i had a motorhome i'd be off a month.no we bought an old cheap caravan
just a year ago to give it a try, its ok and whoever owned it b4 did a great
job of modernising it, but it is 20 years old,and not sure if its upto a 2500
mile journey or more.... did i say its old? the romans left it parked up next to
adrians wall...

now aliena, u need to part ex that tutonic ship in, or atleast give it an italian
engine..otherwise it will have no soul.......

Gio, I laughed out loud then, so long as its had a service and the wheels are declared ok you'll be ok, I was brought up on weekends at Presthaven Sands in Prestatyn with all my relatives as they all had vans too and feel a gypsy at heart. Actually doing my family tree at the moment and my G G G Grandfather was born in Ireland in 1853 but was on the 1881 cencus in Liverpool so perhaps being of Irish decent I do have gypsy origins.

Teutonic engines Porsche everything else off the planet Gianni.. even in times of potato famine. Been there done that Mazzer style :D

:) :)

Oi lad - I'll have you know one of our fields contains a bit of 'adrians aka Hadrians Wall - and we have lived next to it for 15 years nearly - so just cos you are next to some history doesn't mean you are history........

(Chances of getting planning permission on a field that has a bit of Hadrian's Wall in it - just the vallum mind you.....? Answers on a postcard please ....)

the tyres are ok, new last year, but whilst the suspension seems fine,as
does the chassis, really wouldn't want to risk it . at the moment its used for
long weekends 200 mile round trips.and our replacement will be ready next january,my sister in law told me and we will have to pay £1000 for it,or
£750, as thats what she said last time she drank too much!
i wouldn't mind it, but its not like we asked if it was for sale,we were just
told.......

I love caravans. I particularly love being behind one, on an A or B road in July or August when you're trying to get somewhere.

LOL Derek, so true!!!

I'm always close to road rage when I'm stuck behind one... you can imagine narrow winding Highland roads and not one straight stretch in site... and me getting mad!!! The south of France isn't a much better place either lol... ;)

LOL that's why I like it... not the cattle ... but that nobody lives there... :-D

Lots of people do! Just a little more spread out!
I mean, why wouldn't there be people living in, by far, the most beautiful part of the UK? :)

If you ever happened to find yourself behind me while I was towing on a motorway in the south of France (or any other bit of that country), you'd only pass me if you were exceeding the 130 km/h speed limit by a fair margin. I can safely tow at speeds greater than 80 mph and I regularly do so on French motorways. It's not my fault that the law in the UK means I have to pootle along at 60 mph on motorways and no more than 50 mph everywhere else.

If you ever happened to find yourself behind me in the Highlands (somewhere else I've towed regularly) you wouldn't be detained for long. I'm an obsessive observer of what's going on in my rear-view mirrors and you'll never find a queue of cars behind me because I always use laybys and the hard-shoulder to let people pass safely.

Personally, cretins in monstrous 4x4s who sit on my rear bumper when I'm not towing and going at the legal limit are what annoys me most intensely. But, like me when I'm towing, idiot members of the Jeremy Clarkson Fan Club have a right to be on road.

And I'm sensible enough to realise that allowing myself to get angry at such aggressive and incompetent driving just makes things more dangerous for me and everyone else on the road.

Shall we move on at the legal speed limit then, as this is a tad serious? ;)

I thought 4x4s were only allowed to be used for school runs?
