3001 Proof........if it were needed

I was searching the shelves of our local supermercato (yes, sorry, not the local shop!) trying to find some grappa to take back to my work-mates.

I found loads of course, but also found some alcool @ 95% proof.

What the flip is that used for? Can anyone help?

I can only think there's some medical procedures that requires it (or one that's needed after drinking it!)

I wouldn`t know whether there`s a medical use - I hope not!! However it is used to make Limoncello and walnut & coffee liqueurs and, no doubt, a whole host of others.

.......but @ 95%? For general consumption?!

I'm sure only Bin Laden needs that kind of strength!

95% undiluted would do you more harm than good if consumed. Probably it is for diluting into homemade liqueurs.

Also, my science being a bit rusty, but 95% (or 98%) is the purest alcohol you can buy over the counter as 100% proof evaporates at room temperature.

It could also be used for natural medical stuff such as flower essences and homoeopathic remedies - to be diluted down to safe use of course! :)

I usually bring back a couple of bottles to the UK and make Limoncello (sp?) with it. There are loads of recipes on the internet, though the one I use was given to me by a Sicilian. My friend now asks me to bring him back a bottle and he makes something with fresh raspberries. Anyone else have any good liqueur recipes that I could use with the Alcohol in place of lemons?

It's not to be drunk under any circumstances.. no matter how desperate you are. :D

This type of alcohol is used mainly for sterilising "stuff".

For example, if you need to give yourself or someone else an injection.. put some of the alcohol onto a cotton wool ball and clean the skin area with it beforehand.. needles can also be sterilised using this alcohol just before using the 'old fashioned' re-useable syringes..

It's so widely available as most Italians are hypochondriacs and love nothing more than to tell you how close to death they would be if they didn't look like a pin cushion or rattle like a very well stocked Pharmacy. :D

Don't believe me? Next time you are in an Italian house.. go to the loo and look in the bathroom cabinet!

:) :)

trust a scouser to know about needles....mad old bat;)

Sano,

You normaly devide the Proof Rating in half to calculate the true alcohol content. As such 100 Proof is only 50% alcohol by volume. As such 100 Proof is not 100% alcohol. Also the ratio of pure alcohol to water ratio is not constant in every country.

Thanks - my science is bad at the best of times, terrible when half remembered from a class over 10 years ago...

100% alcohol evaporates at room temperature - that much I do remember.

Best I had was 150% Jamaican Rum. I bought it in 1982. I still have 1/2 a bottle. Only used on special occasions or if I get a sore tooth.

Sano,

So, can one get passively drunk, if someone in the room opens such a bottle? :)

Should this be banned in public places? ;)

I don't know but it is an experiment I am willing to volunteer for...

Could this be a low calorie option? We could be onto something here ;)

We use this all the time to make our own hooch. Hic!

The first part of the process involves using the "pure" alcohol to draw all the flavour and colour of whatever you desire to use. Lemons, tangerine, strawberries, raspberries, mint, basil, almonds, walnuts, mulberry and cinammon is nice for Xmas and so the list goes on. The longer you leave your desired contents in the alcohol, the stronger the flavour.

Only ever use unwaxed citrus and only the peel, sliced off before the pith.

After this process is complete, it's just a process of making boiled sugar water (2/1 I think) and then combine with alcohol and bottle.

When cold, limoncino or fragolino is fantastic if mixed with some single fresh cream and stuck in the freezer for an hour or so. If you have the mix right, it will not freeze.

Fantastic stuff and as cheap as patatini!

Yes,alcohol is sold regularly in supermarkets etc, nobody of course would dream of drinking it as it's sold.We use it a lot to make various liquers as has been said like walnut, hazlenut, coffee liqueurs as well as limoncino and fruit under alcohol.Never try to drink it neat it's disgusting even "bums" drink better stuff in this country...it's not a problem...

Hmm..

So.. if everyone is drinking the stuff.. one way or another.. what have I been cleaning needles with? The mind boggles! :D

:) :)

Oh my god! Look's like Dave and me! :o
