Yes please, employment would be good to start

Urm, now I'm stuck, was hoping someone else would actually be able to answer the question now we have narrowed it down a bit. Lets hope. ;)

IF you are employed,it shouldn't be a problem as tax is deducted at source on a PAYE basis along with your share of SS contributions.Taxation is very high in italy (it is said one works from jan to july for the government afterjuly for yourself!)
IF you own a property or are a joint owner then this must go onto your tax return too. However if you are basically or mainly a PAYE employee then you can go to a local center at tax time and get free assistance in compiling your tax return. It is not at all simple to explain probably the world's most complex and peverse taxation system if you consider that the last "new simplified" tax return form was accompanied with an instruction manual of 200 pages...you see what i mean?
IF instead you are or intending to be self employed then i'd personally suggest you find ( possibly before starting any activity whatsoever) a local commercialista who will takeyou thru and will take care of all the burocracy ,follow you returns, vat and the various problems which crop up inevitably when dealing with the Agenzia delle entrate (inland revenue)to try to go it alone would be very unwise ....very. English speaking commercialisti may exist but not so frequent but they are by definition usually quite educated and they're there to get you thru the jungle not for lots of chat so i think you'd manage ok from experience.

I thought that might be the case. I used to work in finance in the UK and briefly looked for info on tax in Italy and ran away frightened!!!
