3026 AIRE getting married in Italy

Hi everyone,

I am an AIRE living in Jersey, Channel Islands, getting married to a British man in Italy later this year. We have been told by the priest who is to marry us that that provided we are prepared by a priest in Jersey who signs to say are ok to get married in the Catholic church and also obtain a nulla osta, we can get married in a church in Italy, without a civil ceremony beforehand. Does anyone know if this is correct?

Any tips gratefully received!

Ciao Daniella,

I got married in Italy with my Scottish husband last year. Why don't you send me a private message, we can exchhange telephone numbers and I'll explain the procedure. Nothing complicated though, you need to get in touch with the consulate for the burocartic part, and with your priest in Italy and the one in Jersey for them to agree a way forward. In my case the priest in Glasgow wrote a letter to the priest in Italy and that was it!

ciao e buona fortuna

Paola

Hi Daniella,

we got "prepared" with a course in a catholic church in the UK (4-5 2 hour sessions over a couple of months) and then got married in a church in Sicily. The priest in the UK simply signed a paper that we attended a marriage preparation course.

Also you need to get a "certificate of non-impediment" from your local registry office. This alongside originals of birth certificates and copies of passport need to be send to the British consulate in Italy who will prepare a "nulla osta" for you.

You can then get married in church - church weddings in Italy have the same "official" validity as civil ceremonies so no other ceremony is required. You literally sign the legal documents in church.

Hope this helps!

Ronald

Paola and Ronald,

thank you for your replies. You have put my mind at rest - I was beginning to that it was not possible to get married minus the civil ceremony.

Much appreciated.

Daniella
