3059 House buying in Rome

I've lived in Rome for 2 years I'm looking to buy a house in the area but would like to get out of the city and find a small rustica (or similar) in the countryside..without paying a fortune... it seems prices in Rome are rising daily...Can anybody suggest a good area to look, would prefer maybe the Castelli area or in the north up toward Orte/Sabina area. We need to be close to a rail route and no more than one half hours from fiumicino.

Any suggestions welcome..

Am curious about Sabina and Orte as they are towns we speed passed regularly always intending to stop at, though never do. They look lovely, as does the surrounding countryside. And both, especially Sabina, are well within 90 mins of Fiumicino even on a bad day. But I'd imagine the Romans are there are weekends so bumping up property prices. We're a lot further north and they invade us most Friday nights! V

Well, you are a bit spoilt for choice in my opinion! Certainly prices out near Orte, Narni, Amelia (very up and coming, Amelia, I think), or in the Sabina area have lots of accessible stuff at reasonable prices.
I disagree with Violetta's reasonable assumption about prices - the reasons why places pretty close to Rome are cheaper than places 200km distant from Rome is that Romans like to have a country bolt hole at least two hours drive away, or it doesn't count!!
Very sensible choice of location on your part - hope you find something suitable. (If your Italian is up to it, have a look at www.casa.it which you can search by Comune and there are quite a lot of useful estate agents present, and (if I'm allowed to suggest a commercial website - no connection etc. etc.) www.casambiente.com have a fair selection in this neck of the woods.

Being biased we would suggest you look in the province of Viterbo for very reasonably priced property. Excellent situation as only just over the hour from Roma and the two international airports, easy access to coast, lakes and mountains. Suggest the Italian franchised Estate agents of www.gabetti.it and www.tecnocasa.it as excellent starting points for your search. If you need to commute to Roma you have a choice of rail lines in the area.

Oli, I just posted about the Colli and lost it cos I hit the wrong button 13 teenagers in the house and I lost control - we're in the Colli could give advise - pm me

We are just in the process of buying a house in this area, I am afraid that anywhere close to the stations are expensive and harder to find. We found that if you can use the car and go towards Rieti on the Salaria, prices are better. Poggio Mirteto sticks in my mind, but we were put off by the time to get there and I work in Monterotondo. We ended up at Capena.

Viterbo is a great location. Relatively affordable, handy for Rome, and Umbria. Not too far from Siena and Florence etc.

I couldn't remember how far north of Rome it was so I searched for 'viterbo' with Google Maps (http://www.google.co.uk/maps?q=viterbo). It turns out that Viterbo is to be found just to the north-west of Birmingham - a lot further from Rome than I had thought and not so scenic!

What do you mean? I used to live in Birmingham.......yea..ok...Good point

~Just had to weigh in (and to register in order to do so). We live in Civita Castellana in Northern Lazio where prices are very reasonable. Prices are even lower in towns like Nepi where there is no train station. Relatively few foreigners live in this area. The train (from Magliano Sabino) to Rome takes 1 hour and 10 minutes, and I can get to FCO in under an hour outside rush hour. Prices closer in (Morlupo, Poggio Mirteto etc) will be higher due to proximity to Rome city limits, but few rustici there.

Viterbo is indeed picturesque, if provincial, and this area is GLORIOUS! You can keep Tuscany and Umbria.

If you want to have a look around, I'd be happy to show you something of the area.
