I'm looking for a lovely country house style hotel (ie not a modern building) for a romantic weekend. We live in Lunigiana and don't want to travel much more than 2 hours away so that would be areas like Florence, Siena, Bologna, Parma, Liguria etc. The ambience of the hotel is really more important than what there is to do in the area.
If anyone's got any recommendations I'd love to hear them. :D
If you are still looking I am a big fan of Laconda della Amorosa (sic) in Motefollonico. Great rooms, great great food, great host.

Thanks for your help. I saw the Locanda dell'Amorosa and it does look absolutely gorgeous. I've booked a hotel called Villa Campestri about 35km north of Florence. I actually know it from my tour repping days 10 years ago - they originally said they were full but now have a room available. Hopefully it'll still be as nice as I remember. The Tripadvisor site's really useful too - I looked it up and it got rave reviews so fingers crossed it lives up to memories and expectations!

Would know a place inland from Naples that is a converted/restored monastery. Is this too far away to be useful to you?

Perfect choice, it's a heavenly place, beautiful surroundings, I'm told lovely rooms, certainly great food, we eat there regularly. My only complaint is I live too near so can't really ever justify staying the night!
So pricey these days but worth a splurge, Villa San Michele at Fiesole. It is a country hotel but only a short bus ride from Florence centre so best of both worlds. Really luxurious and fabulous views. More reasonably priced but just as appealing and views just as nice is the Pensione Bencista in Fiesole. Dinner's a bit institutional but the rest is quite perfect.
Try this web site http://www.tripadvisor.com
You can search under the places you want to visit, and best of all, read the reviews. Hope you find somewhere.
