Hi, I have been living near Lake Garda for about a year now so welcome to one of the most beautiful places in Italy although unfortunately I am moving back. You do need a Permesso and I don't know if you have a nearer one but you have to go to the main police station in Verona (about 40 mins away from the Lake by car). There are always a lot of people waiting there so get there early. I must admit though that I haven't bothered as I tried a couple of times and they are so unhelpful as there are no signs of which queue to go in and you can queue in each one for an hour and be told its the wrong one. If you do go there, when you go in through the door there are three queues on the left and that is where you go but not the middle one. In all I spent three hours and still didn't get one as I didn't have a job and needed to prove I could keep myself which I could but just couldn't be bothered to queue for another 2 hours, but you do need one if you want to get a job or buy a car or anything like that unless you have an identity card.
Anyway, good luck. If you need to know anything else about the area let me know as my boyfriend was bought up here. Good luck.

Hi and thanks for the replies
Would I still need the permission if I have a codice fiscale?
I will be based at Monigal del Garda - so the closest larger town is Desenzano.
Only 20 mins to Verona though by train so I don't mind if I have to go there!

Yes, still need the permesso di soggiorno.
Best to ring up the Questura in Verona to establish which day to go if you are EC - at my local Questura they have "speed queues" for Europeans, and a special desk, and you don't have to wait for a "numbered ticket".
Even so - put aside a couple of hours for this task, and find out in advance what sort of documentation they want from you.

Hi there
You don't need to go to the Questura anymore - and if you did the nearest to you in Moniga would be in Brescia 20 minutes away, not Verona. As an EU citizen you can to go to the Commissariato di Desenzano del Garda, Via Dante Alighieri, 17 tel. 030 9148611. There shouldn't be any queues there. It's still a good idea to phone ahead though to find out what you need to take with you.

PS Pm me and I'll send you a list of the best restaurants to frequent in the area, I've spent many years compiling it ;-):)
Yes. If you are an EU citizen then all you have to do is get a permesso di soggiorno but if you are not an EU citizen you would have to get a visa first then the permesso. Hope this helps.
