An Italian teacher once told me she read cheap trashy short stories to see how many clichès were the same and she was surprised that there were so many. The one that impressed her most was "worked my fingers to the bone" which I have forgotten - does anyone know what that is in Italian?

manca una rotella would mean to us I think - "he's got a screw loose"
How about "off his trolley" - keeps the rotelle in the frame!!
