3163 History/Architecture/Art

Some of the many things that attract me to Italy is it's history, architecture & art. Would it be possible, for those with first hand experience of the regions being covered, to post places of interest that cover these aspects.

As someone who loves the art of the renaissance, i understand that there are frescos by Giotto in the monastery in Assissi, for example. There are many innocuous churches in Italy that you would not look at twice, but inside reveal a whole new dimension of lavishness. Are there places like this in Umbria. Sorry if this sounds a purely selfish request, but at my age 'so much to do, so little time to do it'.

It is very difficult to find somwehere lacking in art or architecture in Umbria!
Il Perugino is probably the best known local painter hero, there are some magnificent frescos by him, in particular one in Citta della Pieve, and one in Panicale - and more in the "National Gallery of Umbria" in central Perugia.
Umbria can offer you Etruscan remains, Roman ones, Renaissance buildings, Churches ranging from C10th to C20th - it has got the lot.
One tip is to look on the Touring Club Italy 1:200 000 maps, and if a place name has got a green line under it, there is at least one piece of visitable art there.
I'm sure looking at the other messages (which seem to tend to be getting filed under locations at the mement) you will discover art or historical tips.
I suppose the major centres of interest from the architectural/historical point of view are Perugia, Spoleto, and Orvieto, with Todi and Assisi running close behind - but as Charles has said, this sort of culture is very thick on the ground, and people from Citta di Castello, San Sepolcro, Bevagna and Montefalco will probably disagree with my rankings.
