apparently Reuters are reporting that a terrorist attack in Milan has been thwarted, it involved trains I think, anyone know any more ??
This is all I could find from Reuters- but seems the Arab News reported a similar story on 22nd March.
CAGLIARI, Sardinia (Reuters) - Italy has thwarted a planned terror attack, Interior Minister Giuseppe Pisanu was quoted as saying on Thursday during a campaign rally ahead of the April 9-10 general election.
"Now I can say it. There was a terrorist plan aimed at our country which was prevented thanks to the controls and preventative measures taken by our (security) apparatus," Pisanu was quoted as saying by Italian news agencies.
Pisanu said the target appeared to have been either the Milan metro rail system or a church in the northern city of Bologna, which has a painting of the Prophet Mohammed burning in hell.
He added six people had been arrested, three of whom were later expelled from Italy, two detained and one placed under observation. A seventh man was still sought.
News of the suspected attack plan was reported by Italian newspapers last month.
Italian magistrates have said in the past that they have managed to thwart numerous attacks by suspected Islamist militants and many suspects have been deported from Italy in recent months.
From the Arab News
ROME, 22 March 2006 — Italy has expelled seven alleged terrorists said to be planning pre-election bomb attacks in Milan and Bologna, Corriere della Sera reported yesterday.
According to the Milan-based daily, the seven planned to blow up an underground railway line in Milan and Bologna’s Basilica of San Petronio.
Investigators believe the suspects, identified as Moroccan and Tunisian, had ties with Osama Bin Laden’s Al-Qaeda and another terrorist group known as Algeria’s Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat.
The attack should have taken place just days before Italians go to the polls in an April 9-10 general election.
The paper said the expulsions are part of the Italian government’s new policy of deporting suspect terrorists before they are brought to trial.

LOL, me too, I'd only put Sky on to hear Tony (blessed be his name) giving a speach in N. Ireland, and they were reporting it as "Live News" the idiots...
Anyway, back to Tony now...

So, George, you edited it so it read ERRM, Non terrorist.....seemed very sensible, BUT it is still up there on the main forum page without the ERRM!!!
Bet this thread gets more views than a Ryanair baggage one :) :)

Hmmm the cynic in me would suggest that parting with such news a few days before an election is rather deliberate...
Well at least no immediate cause for alarm...

Apparently according to them about half an hour ago, there is cause for concern if you are in Scotland because swans infected with the "DEADLY H5N1 virus" are tumbling from the skies all over Scotland. 1 in Fife which "their sources" say will be confirmed this afternoon and 2 in a park in Glasgow, although the Scottish RSPCA has confirmed that one dead swan did turn out to be a large white polythene bag !!!!!

LOL You should see the headlines here today... we made it from our Red Cross centre (aka home) to the local shop for some bread & were surrounded by all those dramatic headlines... haven't heard about the one in Glasgow yet (with or without his white bag) but they still don't know if the Fife one's got the dreaded strain! Suddenly there are exclusion zones etc... never mind the reports saying it had been lying dead somewhere 'for days' !! The most worrying piece of news is that apparently DEFRA is 'prepared'... God help us!! :(
We've been telling our cats not to catch sick birds... hope it works!

"Berlusconi hands in resignation"
I remember this on Sky News at about 11pm one night - back in 1994, I think. Thought it a bit odd it had not hit the Italian TV.....
Next day he handed in his resignation about lunch time. Since then I have always thought Sky News was way ahead of the game in reporting :D :D

the terrorist attack in Madrid, Spain happened just before the election and probably effected it so why not Italy? scary. Let's hope that was the only one planned.

You have made an important political comment there Sarah, it is all very well us joking about the timing of the "press release" of Pisanu's statement (clearly designed to earn points with the Italian electorate) - but as you say, that Madrid atrocity certainly had an effect on the Spanish voters.
