The moon was an ancient symbol of the Luni; an Etruscan civilisation that pre-dated (and was wiped out by) the Romans. The Roman extermination was so extreme, very little is known of their language, culture or religion. There are numerous runis & archetectural sites however.
The Luni stele are a traditional symbol of the region; the region, Lunigiana runs from Northern Tuscany into Ligura.
.......it might not be what you're looking for as the moon is (obviously) a universal symbol!

The film is The Red Violin. Its first setting is Cremona. The moon appears in movie several times. So I am wondering if the moon has something special meaning in Italy.

The moon is used - in Europe, and in the United States in films, literature, and paintings to bring to mind a couple of emotions.
One is love - there are famous songs like Moonlight Serenade, You are My Moonlight and hundreds of others, because moonlight is a romantic sort of light, and we believe that lovers are happiest under moonlight. Ladies look younger under moonlight - like candlelight - nice and soft!
Another feeling evoked by the moon is more spooky - werewolves and vampires feature in a lot of stories and films, and most of the time they get up to their mischief under moonlight.
Does the moon not appear in Chinese Art? What does it signify in China?
(I haven't seen the Red Violin, and perhaps the moon features in some special manner in this film.)

I haven't seen the film, but on reading some reviews, doesn't Anna Bussotti receive the Moon card during a tarot reading? Hence her spiritual link with the moon. and probably why it appears several times.... ????????
Welcome to the forum, can you remember the film title, somebody may have the answer for you .
