There has been a fair amount of debate about insurance providers in the UK in several threads recently. Certainly it is possible for holiday or second homes. At the risk of repeating myself, we have insured through Schofields but there are several other companies who will broke a policy.

Also Italy Magazine has advert from www.italianhomeinsurance.co.uk which may be worth checking out.
If you are over 50, SAGA do overseas holiday home house insurance but exclude earthquake cover so limited application for Italy.
Good luck!

I have seen you have received many useful replies - but I cannot help asking myself if, in the event of an earthquake causing damage, any claim would be met by one of these English insurance companies. I rather suspect that they would confer with their insurance colleagues in Italy, and decide that earthquakes were an act of god, and no compensation would be paid. To my knowledge no Italian insurer covers earthquake damage (unlike inTurkey, where it has been made mandatory for every householder to have insurance cover against earthquakes). Thus - I think that an English company offering such cover should be closely questioned (in writing) before relying on the fact that earthquake cover is included. (I note that SAGA exclude it - seems to me that they have done their research.)

One thing I have found with English insurance companies are the restrictions on how long you can leave you property un occupied. Saga especially, they stipulate that it can't be left unocupied longer than two months.
