3507 Walking

When we visited Umbria with two friends we stayed in Spello and Spoleto, and have also stayed just outside Castiglione del Lago. Our most memorable day was the 7hour walk we did from Spello up to the top of the nearest high point. The route was not clearly marked but we made it up and up through smaller hills passing a couple of ruined houses on the way. All the views, especially the last couple of miles were breathtaking. Apart from the aforementioned houses there was no sign of habitation at all. We loved Umbria and the Umbrians and looked seriously to move there. I will look through my souvenirs and see if I can find some more detail of places and one or two exceptional places to eat.

What are the marked walks like in Umbria?

I know that close to us in Lunigiana, they have recently had a big attempt to imporve the marking & signing of walks.

The walk we did was at least four years ago and back then it was not very well marked. Some parts of it were a scramble up steep banks, or a fight through dense undergrowth; we thought that sometimes we may have missed the route signs, but always came accross them again. The few other walks we did we much shorter but better marked. I will pass on more info if and when I can find it!
