3654 Getting to Ciampino Airport

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated...
We are flying from Ciampino Airport on a Sunday. We will be coming by train from some distance away so we haven't got much time to get from Termini to the airport. It seems that the quickest way is to get the train from Termini to Ciampino and then the Schiaffini bus.
However, while the airport's website (www.adr.it) says that there are buses every 30 minutes from Ciampino Station to the airport, the bus company's website (www.schiaffini.com) shows them as being very infrequent, with gaps of up to 1.5 hours on a Sunday.
Does anyone know which is right?
Thanks.

Terravision runs a service to Ciampino from Termini. Can't remember how long they take to get there but the service is very regular.

I have never noticed a station at Ciampino but I have used the bus from Termini havent done it on a Sunday but just check the web and see if many flights are going - I feel sure if you are at time when there are plenty of flights the buses will be at the station. You need to get a map of Rome if I remember the bus did not go from just outside the station but a road at the rear -5 mins away but just have route planned so you dont waste time. Just hope your trains on time I use them every day!!! Cant you get an earlier train or stop the night in Rome!!

Yup, can only agree with Sano - we used Terravision to and from Ciampino in February. Took us about 30 mins into Rome in the evening but a bit longer back to Ciampino during rush hour.

There is also the www.terravision.it site to check the timetables, but Iona's suggestion of looking at the Ryanair site is probably more safe, since they will tell you which coach (in terms of departure time from Roma Termini) to get to match your flight time.
Beware if you are getting an 8am ish coach - these tend to be very full, and I had to use some very strong language at Ciampino's Ryanair troubleshooting late check in desk, because Terravision (Ryanair's "preferred carrier") had not got me there in time. I would have been in real trouble if I had had baggage to check in!!

We took the shuttlebus from Via Marsala on Sunday just past. Tickets were available from the hotel and buses were scheduled every hour or half hour. Can't remember for sure. The journey only took about 20 mins as there was no traffic . It left at half eight in the morning. Probably a bit busier late rin the day. Hope this helps.

Thanks very much for all your replies and for your help.
I wasn't keen on the Terravision bus because I have heard several horror stories about people not being able to get on because there is a such a scrum (at Termini) and having to get taxis at great expense or risk missing the flight!

I always got the schiaffini bus from Anagnina bus station, but on Sundays the service is much less regular.

The only time I got a Terravision bus, we were deposited on a very busy road a few minutes walk away from Termini - on via Marsala. The bus didn't leave on time, and I personally wouldn't rely on it to get me to the airport on time.

Why don't you go for the taxi option? Termini is one place you'll always get a taxi, though you may have to wait a bit at the busier times. It's not that expensive - you certainly shouldn't be paying more than 30 euro. Much less if there's no traffic. If you get really desperate you can try one of the taxi companies. I always used 06 5551 when I needed to get to the airport early in the morning and you can pre-book.

One thing I would definitely not advise is to take the train from Termini to Ciampino then wait for the bus - you could be waiting all night!

Thanks for the advice. Would you know if you can get taxis at Termini large enough for 5 people (+ luggage)?

At Termini you book your bus according to the departure time of your flight - they actually check your flight number and check-in time. So there should not be a scrum for the bus. There are however at least two other bus companies operating from the same location to Ciampino, so there is some choice when you are there.

Ten of us used terravision in March. Very efficient from Ciampino to Termini.but there was a bit of a scrum on the return journey to the airport, which was at rush hour. We bought tickets on the Ryanair flight into Rome having been told it was a discount price, but they were slightly cheaper on the bus. I saw some horror stories on another site about taxi fares - we needed 3 to take us all from termini to our hotel but one of our crowd had some basic italian and talked the driver down to half of his original price so if you have to go by taxi, agree the fare before you set off. Good luck

In the end we got the bus to the metro when we arrived and then the Schiaffini bus from Termini when we went back. In both cases these were faster, cheaper (much), emptier and quicker than the Terravision bus.
My advice is that when you arrive, go to the bus stop and get whichever is going to leave first - the timetables are all there (you can even check them while you're waiting for your luggage - there are posters up in the arrivals hall). Remember that Saturday is a "feriale" while Sunday is a "festivo".
Going back, just check the timetables and use the best method. (N.B. The timetables on the Ciampino website are wrong - look at the Schiaffini website - www.schiaffini.it)
If you get the Metro from Anagnina, buy your tickets from the newsagent/cafe as you come into the station - there is no ticket office.
The Schiaffini bus goes from the first bus stand as you come out of Termini station.
Terravision is for unadventurous tourists who travel in herds - be cool like the locals and use proper public transport!
P.S. Don't go to the toilet at Termini unless you really have to!
