pisapizza, where are you staying?.
August is like any where else very busy but I'm sure you will like Cattolica.
It's changed so much over the last 10 years and now boasts lovely fountain developments and great beaches with lots of facilities on them including swimming pools, jacuzzis, internet points, games areas for children and adults alike.
The nearby medieval village of Gradara is also lovely and that's where I run my Italian wedding planner agency from.
If you have a look at my website listed below, you will see some nice pictures of Cattolica, Gradara and Gabicce Monte which makes up the lovely little triangle of resorts.
I hope I'm allowed to point you in the direction inorder to see the pics and please it's not a publicity thing at all .
Take care and I hope you will enjoy Cattolica.
If you have any particular questions you want to ask then please don't hesitate.

Hope you recieved my email you can contact me on tomcat29@blueyonder.co.uk

I suppose this depends on how far you want to travel once you are there but If you like castles, then I'd highly recommend the city of Urbino (the Palazzo Ducale) and then San Marino (all of it!).
