3791 wildlife in Italy

Can anyone help me, I'm trying to find out about Italain wildlife, and I'm particularly interested in any local wildlife/conservation groups in Le Marche, and books which can help identify flowers and birds etc. I'm having trouble finding anything on the subject. Any advice would be welcome.....please.

[FONT="Book Antiqua"][SIZE="3"]You can join [B]Lipu[/B] and theres even a British branch! It costs £15 and I think in Italy you can get involved in Local conservation projects.These are their reserves [url]http://www.lipu-uk.org/Oasi/Oasi.htm[/url]

Lipu need all the support they can get I cannot believe that there are only 151 members in Abruzzo!!! Basilica has only 51!! Numbers rise in the North to several thousand but that's probably got more to do with biggest cities being there?

I would have thought that joining a local group would be a great way of meeting others of similar interests and although your elderly Italian neighbours will i'm sure be charming and helpful you may find a clash of interest when it comes to protecting wildlife!

This is what Lipu are trying to prevent!

Thanks, I've had a look at these links and they have some useful bits and peices, but nothing relating to identification books or conservation activities. I'll keep my eyes on this thread to see if anyone else can help.

Jinny, I use the following guide : "Guida degli uccelli d'Europa", auth. Roger T. Peterson, Muzzio ed.. The italian version (which I have) contains even the maps with the italian distribution for each species; it is considered a good guide (and it is probably the most used in Italy), but it is quite old. The best guide is reported to be "Birds of Europe with North Africa and the Middle East", auth. Jonsson, ed. Helm, which is (I believe) probably easier to find in U.K. than in Italy.
About conservation activities, I know the situation in Abruzzo, where WWF ([url]http://www.wwf.it/ENG/[/url]) is the main and most active conservation group; probably in Marche the situation is similar (but I am not sure about that). I would also signal the recently constituted group "snowfinch" ([url]http://www.snowfinch.it)[/url], a small but very active group which conducts conservative and research field activities on endangered species, mainly in Abruzzo, but not only (for example, this year the census of "snowfinches" will envolve even the Sibillini mountains, between Marche and Umbria).

thanks very much for this really useful info, the links are just what I was after. I have been recommended a book called Collins Bird Guide: The Most Complete Guide to the Birds of Britain and Europe
Lars Svensson, Peter J. Grant, Killian Mullarney (Illustrator), Dan Zetterstrom (Illustrator), Dan Zetterstrum (Illustrator), David Christie (Translator). I was after a feild guide rather than a weighty book, so this looks ideal. I'll let the forum readers know if I find out anything else about conservation activities.
