3801 Planting a vegetable bed in May. HELP

 Does anyone know of somewhere that sells tomato and other vegetable plants for me to plant into my newly dug vegetable bed? I have found loads of places which sell flowers but none that have vegetable plants, I have a horrible feeling I've missed the boat for this year

I am based near Montefino, so anywhere around there or Pescara (frequent trips to the airport) would be great.

Failing that, does anyone know what can be planted from seed at this time of year? My seasons are all confused as I am presently picking ripe cherries from my trees in MAY!!

Thanks in anticipation

Hi Carol

Can't help much, but just over a month ago all the tomato seedlings were being snapped up by the thousand in most of the local markets.. so perhaps it's a bit late for them now.

Try the local market - see what's currently available and what others are buying.. even better.. ask your neighbours.. they will know what to do and where to get the best stuff from.

Cherries in May = I'm jealous, but come hell or high water.. I'll be there for peaches, grapes, watermelon and then figs!

Enjoy your cherries!

:D :D

Our markets are now full of all the veggie seedlings and we are further south than you so think you should find them in your markets as well.

[FONT="Book Antiqua"][SIZE="3"]i saw all types of veg plants in markets in Abruzzo last june so you should be able to buy themIf not buy a packet of Butternut squash seeds and plant them straight away. They grow everywhere and smoother weeds and the squash are superb!

They are still for sale around here. we buy ours from the local farm type shop. they also give free advise on how to make them grow well.

thank you all for your advice. I have now managed to get some plants and brought them home this lunchtime, ready for planting out this evening.

I put them in the shade and decided to give them a good soaking ready for planting. I used the sprinkler on the hose pipe and it was only when I watered my foot by mistake that I realised the hose had been in the sun and I was watering my new plants with HOT water!! I'll let you know if they survive their bagno caldo treatment!!

Thanks again
Carol
