3821 American citizens right to stay ?

Hello

Friends of the family are planning to move from the U.S (New Hampshire) to Tuscany in September ,they plan to be resident here but to revisit the U.S for approximately 4 months of the year probably the winter months .

The question is in order to qualify for permenant residency what conditions to they have to meet in the eyes of the Italian government ?

They plan to purchase a property in the next three months but are not clear on the criteria required to put clarity on their "residency status " they need to 100% clear on this this matter before purchase .

They plan to retire here permenantly (current U.S status fully retired )

Could the forum give advive

Thankyou

Basically, they need to apply for a visa before they leave the US. They should apply for the extended stay visa and they will have to prove a monthly income from a pension etc., proof of medical insurance, proof of housing, etc. You can read about the extended stay visa here http://www.expatsinitaly.com/before/visas_extendedstay.htm You can also read someone's actual account of the process that they had to go through here http://www.expatsinitaly.com/before/visas_jill.htm and another here http://www.expatsinitaly.com/before/visas_nan.htm

Once they have the visa and they get to Italy they then need to apply for the PdiS and then residency.

Hello All

Just wanted to on open reply say many thanks to Cristine for a very comprehensive and exact reply to my request for advice .

The forum works in the most positive way in these circumstances and the links that were suggested are already being put to good use .

Here in Bagni di Lucca we have had rain today which is very timely and of great benefit for the wonderful Porcini mushrooms which I will be munching as many of as possible this season .

Yes, a US citizen can buy property without a visa and without residency. To buy a car though, a US resident must have visa, PdiS and residency.

Amazing - I would think that owning property is much more complex than owning a car!

The thinking must go along the lines that houses rarely crash into other buildings, or go at more than 50kph! :)

We are planning to live in Italy for an extended period (years) and will keep our house in California, run a business here etc. What is the residency situation? Can we apply for residency in Italy even though we are maintaining our home, tax base here in the US? I read somewhere that you can't have residency in two countries? Assuming we can solve the buying a car issue (by importing one?), can we live in Italy indefinitely without residency? Many thanks for any advice.

Carole, first you would need to obtain a visa to live in Italy which is not that easy (let me know if you need information about the options you have). Once you get the visa you can come to Italy and first, apply for the permesso di soggiorno and then for residency. I have residency here in Italy and also maintain an address, bank account, etc. in the US. All I have to do is file tax returns for both Italy and the US yearly.

About the car, a car that is imported must be registered within 1 year of arrival so you would need residency anyway. This is a HUGE hassle. One member on my board has had his car sitting in his garage for the past 3 years because he cannot get it certified to drive in Italy even though it is a european made car. Not worth the headaches and the expense. Sell your car there and buy in ITaly (and support the exconomy :) )
