Thanks for the welcome Kim & David.
There are many things that make Italy special for me, but primarily the people, music, art and architecture, and general culture and way of life.

we know a nurse from the uk that is buying down here... it will be her main residence... because of her shift patterns and the experience she has( her employees want to keep her) her plan is to go back for work for her shifts and live here... i dont know exactley how this will work out for her but it seems she will be able to get the best of both worlds...ie continue with her UK job and live over half of the year here.... her nurses uk salary... its very low paid here ... and her italian life style...plus i should think many friends visiting to help with the gardend..... it just sounds a bit better to be arriving to an italian house for your days off... maybe that could be an option to look at.... have you got any friends or family to put you up whilst working your shifts... and could you face doing longer shifts so that you can increase the day off count...or maybe you could cut down the amount to part time... still keep your pension rights ... and part of your salary.... you just have to find a place within reach by budget airlines ...
Welcome to the forum JTD; a nurse might come in handy every so often :D
What is it about ITaly that 'does it for you'? The people, the architecture, the food (the wine)?!?
