more than skewed if the actual rules of the referendum had been applied as set out its doubtful now if italy would have ditched the monarchy at least at the first attempt....
the republicans gained more votes but the percentages are based on only those voters that voted either republican or monarchy.... its a big habit here to white vote...ie leave it blank because you have no preference and also to spoil your paper either on purpose and somtimes by mistake.... these papers that were not filled in correctley were not counted and the referendum had to arrive at more than 50 % of the total vote in favour of whichever... and the conveniently destroyed non votes were not there to be counted when it became a constitutional issue there were not any papers to re count... strange
the president self declared before this legal/ constitutional problem had been solved ... the king tried to refuse but due to the sate of the country it would have virtually meant civil war if he had sacked the government and called for a new poll...
now i am all for the republic but at least they should have started it off in a legal sense in the right way... and it should have been the peoples choice not a forcing ploy on the politicians part
the arguements over it still go on... most agree it was not a legal choice... a few argue that the actual vote and the counting was manipulated...but that is basically just a side show... maybe a few hundred thousand were falsified... but in a way it set the stage for the political power here to do whatever it wanted whenever ignoring the polls and the people and doing what they regard as best in their minds on how the country should be run...it still continues today

I'd say the ex-Royals probably lost a lot of points over the last week...
You must remember that the figures for the referendum were skewed, as no one who had been a member of the facsist party was allowed to vote.
And like Germany, a lot of people had joined for practical, rather than ideological reasons.
