Wer'e hoping to do the same. We bought a casa in San Ginesio last year and are hoping to move over as soon as our UK house is sold.
Again we have funds to last a couple of years and were hoping to ingratiate ourselves with the locals enough to pick up some odd bits of work.
Some people may think this is crazy when my wife and I both have good jobs in the UK but we realy don't want to spend the rest of our lives sitting in a traffic jam on the M1.
Anyway keep in touch with the forum and let us know how you are getting on and we will do the same.

Your comments are exactly what we think. For the last few years we have been 'plodding' a long in life and I was sick of being stuck in traffic either to or from Newbury from our house in Devon.

Once trusted by the locals and especially after a couple of years I'm sure some sort of work will crop up. Probably nothing what we thought we would end up doing mind you.

Good luck to both of you; it's nice to see that folk plan for "a few years off" in order to get work.....I'm also glad to see someone over the age of 25 taking a gap year (or two)!

We're hoping to start with a holiday cottage at some point but are nowhere near moving. It's still a dream for the moment, but I'm glad yours is about to come true!

Unfortunatley I don't think there is a great demand for qualified health and safety specialists so I'll have to be pretty flexible work wise.

Sully, I think you might be very surprised just how much demand there might be for qualified health and safety specialists.. if your language skills are up to it.

Not sure what you mean by qualified H&S specialist, but if you are NEBOSH qualified, I would think you will do very well. A friend of mine is doing this in Spain, for UK firms based in Spain. So you never know.

Many years ago I used to work on the deckchairs hiring them out to holiday makers in Devon, I can't even do this now with all the private beaches :D

Unfortunatley my language skills are still pretty basic at the moment but hoping they will vastly improve when we move over to Italy.

Our house also contains two apartments which we hope will bring in some much needed income.

We feel a lot more positive with everyones encouragement as even though we have made the decision to move it is still quite daunting at times.

Anyway we are flying over in the morning to Bologna - Forli (never landed there before usualy land at Ancona) and flying back next Wednesday.

My first chance to sit down since arriving back in Britain so I just thought I'd leave an update.
Arrived at Casa Biaggi to find weeds a foot high on the drive, the grass was 4 foot high so we unpacked and set about the grass and weeds. As I started to cut the grass the tractor broke down so I spen't a week trying to fix it.

I suppose this can be one of the problems with having a holiday home the fact that you are not there often enough to maintain it yourself.
I will be glad to make it my permenant home and have the time to tackle some real projects rather than just doing things that you can start and finish in a week.

Well done on making the move, i've just been finished from Dunlop Tyres after 26 years service, don't really care for staying in Blighty no more; I'm getting a good redundancy pay off and we would make the bold move to live and work in Italy but i have elderly parents to care for.

One of these days though.

I took redundancy after 11 years which gave me a bit of dosh, but I too have had enough of Blighty. I was going to do the move anyway so the redundancy just helped us do it a year sooner. Mind you I had to try and not laugh when my boss told me my post had been disestablished in the restructure. :D

My parents are both in their early 70's and they are talking about renting a place near us, so they can come out for a few months at a time. They talked about relocating to Italy years ago, but then the first grandchild arrived, then the second and so on.

I suppose you need to use the time between now and when you do move, to plan the relocation, i.e learning the language, drinking Italian wine, supporting Italy at football..............well perhaps not too much.
