Travel & Holiday Advice

We stayed at the Locanda Sant'Agostin (we relied on Trip Advisor rankings again) and found the place 'adequate' in terms of facilities, great in terms of location & excellent in terms of personal service/staff.

We took the bus into town from Treviso airport & found it a bit of a slog, but again, it did the job! When we arrived in Piazza Roma, we then took the water bus to our hotel.

I'd advise against buying a weekend pass for the water bus as we walked almost everywhere & only took the water bus once or twice.

FYI there was also a promotion at the time when one could take a water taxi (a delightful Riva boat) over to Murano for free..... it was a toursit thing run by the glass factories on Murano to drum up trade. Yes it was free, no it wasn't tacky sales ploy, no there was no pressure to buy a EUR10.000 chandelier! I hope it's still in operation (look out for them at the canal end of Piazza s/Marco)

Also.....don't go into any of the cafes on the Grand Canal...sheeesh! What a rip off; there were plenty of wonderful local places to eat/relax everywhere.

Enjoy!

We have been to Venice four times, staying for a week at a go. It is a wonderful place. Lucky you going there!

We have stayed in the centre twice and the last two times on the Lido, 6-10mins direct Vaporetto to St Marks Square.

Don't know if you have been before, but we found the best way to see the place is to buy a 3day or weekly Vaporetto pass and then you can hop on and off the boats and go anywhere in the lagoon.

Best way in the main part of Venice is to just wander! A nice vista or sight around almost every corner. Leave St Marks Square until your second day, and it really is best first thing in the morning or in the evening. Beware the cafe's in the square (eg Florians etc) are v. expensive but given the live music we have enjoyed a couple of pricy drinks and the wonderful atmosphere in the evening.

Do go up the Campanile at Salute - even better view from there than from the Campanille in St Marks Square.

We found staying on Lido is best, only a short boat ride from St Marks, and quieter in the evening and when you want to sleep!

Excellent and welcoming hotel set in a restored Villa in Lido is Villa Casanova - naff name, but excellent rooms and better quality breakfast than most, and proper expresso coffee at breakfast time - think we paid about 70-80 euros per night for double room with b/fast. Venice is speical, the top hotels are prohibative, and some of the lower priced ones can be basic, or plain horrid. Villa Casanova is nice enough to make the stay feel like you are somewhere special. See www.casanovavenice.com

No restaurant but there are several within 5 mins stroll of the hotel, and if you hop on the Vaporetto you can be in the centre in minutes and then there are hundreds of excellent places to eat if you avoid those that are clearly for the tourist!

July can be very humid! Just be warned.

If you are flying into Marco Polo quickest way into Venice is by boat, not Water Taxi (expensive) but the Vaporetto. Buy your ticket in the terminal and follow the signs. If you are flying into Treviso it is a 45min plus bus ride to Venice.

PM or email if you want any more info!

Enjoy!

Many thanks for info - will be very useful.

Robert Hi I had a look at the link and it does look very nice there indeed!!! However what a jump in prices according to season!!! 30-180 euros for a single room per night!! Still I have too much work to do on my nnew house in Abruzzo at the moment!!!

Janet have a look at what I put about the cheapest way to get in from Marco Polo on the venice section.
You're unlikely to find a bnb with a restaurant attached (thats mostly hotels) but if you ask they will almost certainly recommend somewhere good and cheap nearby if you ask for a local place where venetians eat - they do exist!
If you are going in summer I agree with robert its nice to be on the Lido - we had a flat there for a week one year in August - spent days on the beach and late afternoons and evenings exploring venice.
Using venere.com for avail and prices combined with tripadvisor is a good way to check out places.
If you are there in Autumn winter stay in Venice proper - NEVER in Mestre unless you are on a desparate budget. Think about apartments too - they will often let for a 3 night break and its lovely to have a 'home' to go to rather than a hotel room - they start at about 110 euros a night. If you want details pm me and I'll send you links to a couple of places we have stayed in.
I'm back next month for Redentore - I'm a fool for a firework so v excited.
Have a great trip. Its a fabulous place unlike any other.
