3767 a new fan of the calabria region

hi people............a friend of mine bought a little place in scalea and invited me out...i was sold not only on scalea but on the whole region...im here in dublin and its not the easiest place to get to without a long haul but wow is it worth it.....i will be looking for a place out there myself....We visited the historical part of scalea and was stunned by its beauty...this is the place i would be interested in buying in.....what can anyone tell me about the pro's and cons of buying a place there and having it renovated. I am clued it to the costs , but what i would like to know is what are the pitfalls ...maybe someone out there has already done this here or in a similar area...i would also be interested in any info i can get on traveling by train from rome to scalea .. i travelled from rome by car the last time and would like to know what time and effort it would take to get from fumichino airport to central train station....would i be better off hiring a car and forgetting about the train or would it be better and more relaxing to take train....

Welcome, trex! I'm glad you're 'one of us'...........The first step is admitting to it......you're amongst friends here :D

As for pitfalls, I'd suggest that many of the issues are not region specific & that you search under Estate Agent, Virgin (no, really, there's a good thread!) and solicitor.

With regards rail travel, there's a Trenitalia website that's got a stack of information....we haven't tried the rail travel as it just involved too many changes!

Welcome, again!

Probably a little more expensive but did you know Aer Lingus have a regular service to Napoli?
From there, just over 2 hours by car to Scalea or 2.5 hours by train.
Welcome! :)

Actually Trekie, this link gives you a summary of all the budget airlines & so will act as a short cut to searching soooo many different airline.

I've also found that SkyScanner is useful as it links you through to a live pricing system so if you're open on the dates you fly, it helps you find the best deal across a range of airlines.

We have a house about 20 minutes south of Scalea and have driven from Rome and Naples previously but haven't tried the train yet.
Last time we flew to Lamezia Terme from Stansted with Ryanair, might it be worth considering Dublin - Stansted - Lamezia?

Also Thomsonfly do Manchester or Gatwick - Lamezia, could you maybe connect from Dublin to Manchester or Gatwick?

Lamezia is about an hour and a half south of our place.

Regards Lesley & Brian

Ciao all, I wanted to reply to your comment about rail travel. I have made my own travel plans, sometimes for a group, and find the rail travel the only way to go. I use the website for RailEurope and book my own reservations on the Eurostar. It's part of Trenitalia, but all reservations. We've traveled
1st class and 2nd class. The only difference on the Eurostar is that 1st class passengers get free coffee, juice, cola and cookies. The 2nd class passengers have to pay for their own drinks. The seats are exactly the same and I find Trenitalia the best way to travel. Of course, you have to be adventurous and like to walk because most stations are in the center of the city. We always book hotels within walking distance. I'd be happy to offer any information I can. Carol
